i don't remember how i went from
to

all i remember is a desaturated the photo of the tiger and used the clone stamp tool to place it on the t-shirt, but i can't figure out how i got it to look the way it does, i'm pretty sure it was more than just posterizing it. the image on the t-shirt is a brush, by the way.

no, i used the clone stamp tool with a soft brush of about 200 diameter and erased the background out.

what i am trying to figure out is how i managed to get it black and white like that and not completely posterized. can anyone help me?

^ What she said is correct. Image > Adjustments > Threshold . Edit the level until you're satisfied.
