For those of you who dont know, the atkins diet is used to cut back on carbohydrates. Carbohydrates turn into a sugar after being broken down. Carbs are good for you but if you eat too much you can become overweight. The atkins diet basically is this.
You need Carbohydrates for energy, and with no Carbs energy doesnt know where to get its fuel from. This is where the atkins diet comes into play. Energy then, instead of using carbs will use fat for fuel instead, this is how the atkins diet works. It uses the fat that you have, when your body doesnt have a sufficient amount of carbs in your system. Hence, you get skinnier. Yet on the flip side if you dont eat enough carbs then that can be hazardous to your health. So you must watch how much Carbohydrates you are consuming. I hope this helped you in the answer to your question. I'm no nutrionist but my mom is a nurse so I pick up on things here and there ![]() |

Atkins is more of a unhealthy diet, having you eat more foods such as bacon, processed cheese, ham, sandwich meats, ect.
South beach is more of a healty diet, having you eat such things as turkey, salmon, vegetables, chicken, ect. Hope that helps. ![]() |

my ex girlfriend use to atkins even though she wasn't even fat but actually lost about 7lbs in like 3 weeks. i told her to stop using it cuz i didn't like her to be losing so much weight for a person who was already imo healthy.

Well, mortal enemies from half a decade ago, low-carb diets like Atkins will cause you to oxidize muscle mass and store bodyfat. Since adipose tissue is less dense than muscle, the sum comes out to a reduction in total bodyweight, yes, but you'll have a higher bodyfat percentage than before because less of your frame consists of muscle to offset that ratio. In the case of carbohydrates, they increase glycogen levels through glycolysis, prevent secretion of the catabolic hormone cortisol, increase growth-hormone levels, and administer amino acids to thereby increase plasma insulin concentrations (since the presence of hyperaminoacidemia, or amino acids in the circulatory system, is in correlation with supraphysiological increases in insulin), all of which contradict the processes of muscle catabolism. This is relevant because when you undergo amino acid catabolism, you'll store more fat the next time you eat as a survival mechanism.
