QUOTE
Skateboarders aren't watching where they're going. They're watching for the next thing they can grind on whether someone is in front of them or not. And generally, it's more difficult for skateboarders to stop or turn especially when they're moving fast.

not true at all its easy to stop unless u suck.i watch where im going, i dont try to grind everything i use it as transportation and im sure most other people do like the ones in college.

QUOTE
Last but not least, SKATEBOARDING IS NOT A CRIME, IT'S A(N)MISHAP/ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN.

so what is football or rugby then?

wtf who jumps in the back of vehicles that doesnt even make sense to me please explain.

i agree with s..acid thats all true

QUOTE
Again, skateboarders are not "inherent dangerous" and are as harmless as someone riding a bike if and only if they grow some common sense (among the other qualities I talked about). If only the ones that I had to kick out at the Y had the same consideration of crashing into the wall before they crashed into me... then I might have been a little more understanding. Unfortunately, not even a "I'm sorry" was uttered... just a laugh and he took off.

Genarilizin skateboarding on ones mans actions,SMART, maybe he was just a DICK, let alone riding a skateboard, that would be the first thing to come out my mouth.Hell i pick up my board when i go past the eldery. GTFO

QUOTE
Technically your not supposed to ride bikes on the sidewalk either.

exactofcking right they are only concerned with skaters, its KINDA(no flaming) LIKE/SIMILAR to a race issue.

QUOTE
I cant stand this subject, if you own the property do what you want. If you don't GTFO. If you were to skateboard in the parking lot of Krogers and hit your head and you gain say a $200,000 dollar hospital bill for surgery, stay and transportation, guess who has to pay that bill? Krogers, its a god damn joke. If I ever catch a kid riding a skateboard in our driveway I will kill them, with everyone in the world sue happy, you have to cover your ass or you will wake up someday with NO money at all.

ok if i own a store with stairs im tell all the people to GTFO so incase if they fall i wont get sued...People can sue for anything let them walk and fall cant they still sue?

yea, i am. i leave in about a week.

anyways; i am not aware that bicycles are required to have insurance.

Let's drop the bike messenger thing and go with just bikes. Anyone can ride a bicycle as dangerously as a bike messenger, and yet there would most certainly still be a disparity in treatment as compared with a skateboarder.

Although I definately believe those skatboarders should be punished because they were breaking the lay, the way the police officer handled the situation was inappropriate. Those kids could have been seriously hurt and I wouldn't be surprised if the two that were choked had muscles pulled in their neck.

True, they shouldn't have resisted the police officer... but being arrested for skateboarding? You get fined for running a red light, even if it's in a busy intersection... but you get arrested for skateboarding in a no skateboarding zone?

Okay, which is more likely to kill someone: a skateboard or a car.... hm.

I think their are faults on both sides, but maybe because I am a teen I am siding with the teens on this one.

And you are the king of skateboarders and you speak for everyone and everyone who skateboard is a good skateboarder and no one sucks.. uh huh.

What about Rugby and Football? They're sports that are usually played in places where people don't have to tell them to GTFO. Do you see anyone complaining about them? What's there to complain about? Are they breaking any laws?

What did Mr. Acid say that you agree with?

Generalizing? Like you don't generalize when you think your skater friends are perfect angels who abide by the law? That logic is surely skewed, if not silly.

You think that people just pick on skateboarders because they're innocent and everyone's a jerk?

Everything is so simple in your world isn't it? From the way that you talked about suing people, I bet you've never even handled anything more than $10 because if you have, you wouldn't/shouldn't be able to talk like that. You probably never even gotten in car because you obviously don't worry about what goes on after an accident. You probably don't even understand the concept of insurance and liability. So because you don't know, I won't laugh at you for it. I'll just be patient.

1. If you're concerned about transportation, get a bike, learn to drive, take a bus, take a trolley, WALK. It's not imperative that you use a skateboard to get from point A to point B.

2. Football and rugby are sports... I think I missed the point of this argument.

3. If you really were such an amazing skater, you'd know the term called "skitching". It means grabbing on to the back of a vehicle in order to gain massive speed and most often turns into a bloody accident. It's really not uncommon.

There you have it. What is the term? Pwned? Yes, that's it.

Number three is an especially good point, Katt.

Seriously, it doesn't matter if the kid's on a skateboard or bike... doing that is... well... dangerous... and it proves that "recreations" like these must be regulated. A little discipline won't hurt.

I say "kid" but realize that I call people my age "kids", too.

difference of a bike from a skateboard? bike proably being more dangerous and faster and more risky.Of course i dont have to take a skateboard but what happens if i wanna be eco friendly? i dont see how it not being imperative have to do with my topic at all.If i drive gas and college parking is horrendous. Why not look cool riding a skateboard from point a to b.

also skateboarding is a sport.argue.maybe in not this situation though.

oh yes i know what skitching is lol ty tony hawk games. And im sure people try that but thats just a responsibility issue.i have yet to see someone do that in my whole life besides me jokingly.anyone can abuse something by being stupid.

1. What? You missed that point (like you have missed most points) entirely. Moving on.

2. And you missed the point, again. Let me spell out this one though because you tend to misunderstand a point and turn around and poke the person who poked it at you, but then they won't know what on earth you're saying. What we've been talking about isn't about kids getting hurt. Period. Let's get pass this silly "skateboarders get hurt just like everyone else can get hurt", because that isn't the main problem, it's just something supplemental.

The main problem is the breaking of laws, the disrespect of private property, and the abuse of public property. Are we in the clear now? Let me bold it again so we don't have to misunderstand each other again.

The main problem is the breaking of laws, the disrespect of private property, and the abuse of public property.

3. "Wtf" am I talking about? I'm talking about you not knowing anything that goes on when someone has an accident (the crashing into something kind, not the smelly kind). You don't know the concept of liability, or else you'd know who has that liability thrust upon them when an idiot decides to be an idiot on their property. Do you know what I'm talking about now?

4. And... you missed her point. Not surprising, but disappointing. I'll yield to her for spelling it out for you because it's not a point I brought up.

5. I do not doubt that skateboarding IS a sport, love. Even someone as old and reclusive as me (sarcasm) know of Tony Hawk. But you said so yourself, in this case, it's arguable if it's a sport. Even if someone can argue that it is a sport, one then has to ask if it's a "legal" sport.

6. Obviously, something's been abused (property)... or else we wouldn't be having this discussion.

By the by, I've seen videos of kids jumping off of houses. It is stupid, but if they're in their own houses, at least they're not doing something illegal and innocent property owners elsewhere don't have to be liable for their stupidity.

1. Okay, let's put the slang aside. Someone inexperienced who uses his skateboard as transportation will be more likely to get into an accident.

When a teenager gets granted his license for the first time, he is more likely to get in an accident than someone whose license was granted 20 years ago. That's why insurance is so much higher for young people.

That's not to say that someone that's had their license for 20 years is safe from accidents, but their insurance is a lot less because it's less likely for it to happen with experience.

My point? Not everyone with a skateboard knows how to control it.

2. When you sign up for a sport such as rugby or football, you are acknowledging the possibility (almost certainty) of getting hurt. These sports are played within enclosed areas where all the players are willingly and actively participating in the sport. As long as the players aren't tackling civilians, it's perfectly legal.

Take boxing for example, the point being to knock the other person out. Perfectly legal because both parties agree to it.

However, when you're skating, the person you're turning into roadkill most likely has not signed an agreement allowing this.

3. We're not trying to offend you. That's not the purpose of a debate.

4. You're right, bikes are a lot faster, but there are a number of things a bike has that a skateboard doesn't. First of all, BRAKES. Secondly, those cute little bells you can ring to tell someone you're coming. Thirdly, the ability to make sharp turns, decrease your speed and overall better control.

As far as being eco friendly, I'd encourage using a bike. thumbsup.gif

5. Yup, skateboarding is a sport, at least in my book. I'm not saying skateboarding in itself should be outlawed, but it should definitely only stay within areas where it's permitted.

6. Breaking city ordinance laws is showing a lack of responsibility.

i guess you guys win im the only one arguing =(. But alot of people do use skateboards as transportation just cuz its more portable and less expensive than a bike, which tends to get stolen. people dont use skateboards as transportation unless they know how to ride because if they dont they would be incredibly slow.

True that skateboarding on private property is illegal, but bmxers do it also.(not on same topic)and they should be punished. But signs say no skateboarding as the destroying of property not transportation, and in that video it looked like they were just skateboarding.

skateboarding on privat property is just a misdamenor, why would the cop use excessive force. so if he let them go what mighta happaned. Can a cop even touch you for a city ordinace?

the cop's use of force was justifed because they were fleeing law enforcement, to which police officers are allowed to chase and retrain you.

However; the chokeholds were a bit excessive, as was making them lie on the sidewalk.

Agreed. I think those cops were just poorly trained. Any decent cop should be able to handcuff a child within 15 seconds without pinning him to the ground or putting him in a headlock.

bmxers should get punished if they violate the law; you're right on that and I agree. If the kid got punished for just innocently skateboarding on public property, then yes, that cop was way out of line. In fact, I do believe he got more rough than necessary.

I wouldn't believe what I see online too often though. I question the credibility of things like that. Why? There was a famous picture of a soldier executing a what seemed like an unarmed man. The soldier was condemned by many, including allies of that army. What we didn't know was that "unarmed" man is a cold-blooded killer, whose plots cost the lives of many civilians and bystanders.... The photographer had to apologize to the soldier for what he did many years later when he finally understood the consequences of it.

The point being... a picture don't always speak a thousand words. In this case that video could be a joke (like that crazy bride who cut off her own hair video) or it could be that the kid stole something or committed a crime and got caught. Or, it could be that the cop was in the wrong. We don't know for sure. However, because it cannot be validated, I don't see why we have to base our arguments on it.

See, why would the cop need to handcuff the them if they didn't commit a crime (the others being accessory to a crime)? You do know that cops could get in trouble if they cuff without reason, right?

----
Edit... oh, haha, you all need to read the commments on the Video.

What idiots. They can't even control a bunch of preteens. I'd have gotten a taser out if I were them. Those kids don't know what they're getting into. It's pathetic, really. Such disrespect to their elders and the law. Where are their parents? stubborn.gif

I've seen that video and I don't think the kids shouldn't gotten in any trouble. I honestly don't see the big deal in skateboarding.

I've never seen a cop yell at someone who was riding a bike. My little brother rides a dirt bike on public streets and no cops say anything to him - but when it comes to skateboarding, the cops are all over that. I don't get it.

^ ... Way to contribute nothing to the thread. How about reading one or two of the posts?

And don't you mean "should've", not "shouldn't"?

Skateboarding is against that city's ordinance laws. Therefore, it's punishable. Saying that kids shouldn't be punished for breaking the law doesn't make any sense.

Lmao. Wow you must feel quite clever.

Just so you know, I'm active on the debate forums and have been since early '06 (this is a different account), so I rarely post without reading previous posts.

If you read through the posts on that thread, you could see I did contribute a lot to it, but I said I was done. I just came back to see what everyone was up to and decided to post something to keep myself busy.

Now stop making threads go off topic. Gosh!

oh ok
well im just going off what u told me
and that would be that u didn't know what we were talking about

and anyway
i've seen cops getting carried away and just want to show off in the moment.
but like a previous post said, i don't really trust the videos, since u can't really tell what all was going on. but if i was just going by the footage shown, i think tackling kids is a little too much for just skateboarding
