my ex/bff's 18th birthday is in a couple of days and i still havent gotten him a present
would it be better to get him one expensive thing that he really wants
or lots of little thoughtful gifts, that have meanings to them?
because i am not entirely sure what i should get him
any ideas??

I think the little gifts that have meaning to it will be really nice.

I agree, get him little gifts with meanings and put them all in a basket or something.

my friend got a me a bunch of random things that really had no meaning, but were funny. i thought it was better than getting something big because, though i didn't need any of it, it was funnier to get that than something i really wanted.

Colour me shallow, but on my birthday I got stuff from my Amazon Wishist (check if he has one, by the way). Sentiment is nice, but that's what a card is for, and I wanted something which I wanted.

But really, you know him. What would he prefer?
