I never get on createBlog, but I felt that I just had to let it out.

This isn't asking for help because help cannot be given.

As of 1920 CST today, Myspace has blocked the "position:" attribute. Maybe there is a fancy way of getting around it, but a lot of layouts I've seen use it. I've already mailed Myspace about this, and I believe that it is about people who have used the absolute value to cover up their ads. (I'd like to mention that according to a news source, they make at least $25 million a month on ads alone)

I want to know how you guys feel about this. If Myspace does not bring it back, or offer us an alternative, designs will be limited.

Yeah, I just noticed that, and two people have already posted in the Myspace help section about it.

If they don't give us an alternative, or unblock it, it'll definitely suck.
But people will get over it, I suppose. shrug.gif I dont use "position" anyways. Sooo, it doesnt really affect me, personally.

edit: LOVE the avatar, btw. <3

I snooped around Myspace help and found:
QUOTE(Syphon @ Apr 23 2007, 7:50 PM) *
I found the solution. Seems like they added a filter for the position tags. You either have to change the capitalization of the word (ie. pOsition, posiTion, etc.) or change it to "position : absolute"
No idea why Myspace would make it non-case sensitive. Works though. ^_^ Don't think it will last long.

^ The "position: absolute;" code for DIVs. _smile.gif
But actually, someone said theres was working fine, so maybe.. they didnt block it, and it was just a glitch? idk.

They also blocked the ".hidethem" code, for hiding details.
but I believe ".hide" works just as well (correct me if I'm wrong).

Since this seems like an issue the more design aligned people would find interest in, I'll move this to Designers' Cafe for now.

Moved from The Lounge to Designers' Cafe.

imeem codes don't work anymore either...
they really need to alert their users when they filter things... leaves people confused and wondering wtf happened...
like that whole comment box thing... didn't stop the spam if that was their goal.... now they attack messages....

This is so confusing. For people, like me, who are capable of making their own layouts but wouldn't dream of saying they had confidence in their coding skills, this is like trying to navigate a minefield. If trying to figure out what went wrong before wasn't hard enough, now I have to go and check to see if it's not actually me going insane, but Myspace increasingly imposing limits on what we can and cannot do. They need to have a dedicated user alert posted on the Myspace homepage. One small banner wouldn't hurt amidst the clutter of their ads and promotions.

this actually pisses me off, seriously they are penalizing people who are trying to be creative and design because a few idiots are blocking ads. Also they are extremely greedy... everytime someone uses another site to put stuff on their myspace (ie. photobucket), they block it so they make more money. Honestly $25 million is more then the mojority of the population makes in a lifetime and they make it in a month. It just upsets me because now i have to go back and change all my codes everytime they decide they are going to block something. People are leaving becuase of this. Something amanda touched on was the spam and it's true has not stopped at all if anything for me it has gotten worse, and that code you have to enter everytime you edit your profile makes me crazy.

ok i'm done ermm.gif

edit: sorry if thats confusing i wrote it in parts so i hope you get the point XD

Wtf? They blocked the "position: __" attribute? How effed up is that. This rather unannounced new code filter should change very soon, cause I'm not gonna edit all my Myspace layout codes and go the impractical way. Somehow, I view Myspace as a corpulent, greedy monster that has no time to listen to our little opinions and complaints because of its stuck-up-ness. tongue.gif

I wish I could hold a boycott .. _dry.gif

Edit: . . And now they've put up image verification codes as you edit your profile. Ughh. I think Pseudo-AIM will be the last Myspace layout anyone will ever see from me. mad.gif

Dude. I was making my new myspace layout, the one I have up right now, the other day. And I'm the type of person that saves changes with every single little thing I change just to see how it looks like. So that stupid verification thing took up like an hour of my time. OMG I was sooooo pissed off at it. >.< Gah. Myspace is seriously starting to get really [insert adjective curse word of choice.]

I think they're going to loose a lot of members because of this and lots of money since huge companies depend on creative myspace designs and myspace is limiting the flexibility of it.

I think it is time to come up with a myspace alternative. someone should make a site which allows people to freely edit pages to see what they look like without the jambles of check codes which piss people off. Also I noticed that sometimes it doesn't ask for the code, and sometimes it does.Is there a reason for this?

so i hear they are upset about sites like youtube, imeem, photobucket, and other sites to upload music and videos and images are gaining their fame off of myspace. So they start to block/filter their codes and those sites that want to keep their place in myspace has to pay to be there. I don't see why thats such a problem, with out the freedom of being able to put videos and music from outside sites made myspace soo popular. blocking the sites will end up in a loss of users.... then again myspace went downhill when that dude/company bought myspace back in 05.

Livejournal all the way! LOL and having come back into this thread, I realise why there is such a distinct lack of Myspace layouts being submitted lately. Sad times.

And it's ironic really that I would suggest LJ in its place because the very appeal of Myspace was the sheer ease and flexibility of making a new layout from scratch, even by someone who isn't particularly skilled in coding.

^ You're not! I'm sure you've tried and you're a way better coder so I'm not going to tell you how to do what, but the plus of Livejournal is that there are a buttload of dedicated communities which are really helpful; I know Myspace has some but, the Livejournal ones are just more accessible, integrated and useful.

If you get a paid account, you can pretty much completely re-write your LJ from scratch. It's not as straight forward as Myspace, as I've said before, but at LJ, you really get the support you need. Hence probably why the Myspace forums here are so much more used than the Livejournal forums.
