So creepy... and horrible. And usually these shooters kill themselves, so there's never any real justice.

So having the state deliver a death sentence has more justice than him killing himself?

This thread is going nowhere, just like the investigation on his motives are going nowhere.

CB members are pointing fingers at each other, arguing about opinions, struggling to be tactful (and failing miserably), and the media is pointing fingers at completely unrelated issues.

On the other hand, if you had nothing to live for, what would you do?

Yeah ok, let's make more laws. Because the laws sure did a good job stopping this kid. Yep, America should become a police state and have camera surveillance everywhere we go and have the government spy on our citizens even more than they are now.

What kind of country does that?
No, the fact that you gain little by taking away guns from the upstanding citizens. You know, the ones that would be able to pull out their own gun and stop the other person from killing 30 people.

The best part is the same thing applies to getting drunk, except drinking related deaths are higher than gun related deaths in youth.

I wonder why we don't have such problems in Europe.

In britain for instance they have no gun licences, and though there are still guns around, they're quite hard to come by unless you have plenty of money or the right contacts - two things most high school and college kids don't have. I don't give two shits about the American constitution, it was written a long time ago, and things have changed, people have changed, and the laws of the land should reflect that and protect them from themselves. I'm not saying banning guns will sort out the social problems that seem to inspire people to use them on each other, but it would make that much harder for one or two people to kill large numbers of their fellow human beings.

Alright, let's take away free speech. Time's changed.

You do have such problems in Europe. The fact of the matter is, it won't stop gun crime. Guns are banned in NYC, but it has higher crime than in places that guns aren't banned. Britain's crime rate actually increased after gun laws were tightened. After the 1997 ban, gun crime nearly doubled in 2002. The number of injuries also doubled as well. Pretty much all males in Switzerland own a gun. Guess what, their gun crime rate is among the lowest in the world.

Do I believe that everyone in the US should own a gun? No. But I believe that if someone is qualified to own a gun and wants one, let them buy one.

If we want to protect people from themselves, go lock them up and take away all their freedom. But even then, they will not be completely safe. What you are suggesting is tyranny and is exactly the reason why the second amendment exists.

I think the second amendment was taken through a very different approach when it was made, back then guns werent as compact and advanced as they are now. But i do believe getting guns should be much tougher, i think they mentioned that he had to wait one month to get his second gun? what good is that going to do? then people will just wait to get another gun or have someone else buy one.

The second amendment was written so that we could overthrow the government if a tyrannical ruler came to power. The fact that guns are better now makes no difference. In fact, we the people are at a huge disadvantage since military technology is so much better than weapons available to the general public.

Excuse me. It is not hard to prevent yourself from being filled w/ such hatred just because you were treated badly in your life. Everyone is treated badly in life in some ways. Why? Because there are a lot of people in the world that care only about themselves. Blaming them for your shortcomings makes you ONE of them. If there was one thing I could wish about this tragedy (other than for it not to have happened at all, obviously) I would wish that this guy could have just taken responsibility for his his own actions. Obviously there were attempts to get this guy out in society and make friends by his roommate and several others but he never accepted any help. Judging by his "imaginary girlfriend named 'Jelly,'" and his seeing "promiscuity" in the eyes of someone he had been stalking and harrassing, he was obviously a demented kid so blinded by hate that he was unwilling to accept the help of others before it was too late.

Obviously the guy wasn't qualified but he still was able to buy a gun. Doesn't that tell you something about your country? And no, in comparison with America, Europe is far off when it comes to gun crimes. It's not just the law, it's also the way people are brought up. Though I can't help but think that if it were harder for people to get guns, there will be less deaths. It's simple logic.

FYI, making guns harder to obtain doesn't restrain you from having freedom. Is owning a gun really that important to you? Why don't you go load your house then? I know a lot of people in America almost sleep with their guns under the pillow. And I don't even lock my door. Both in Canada and Europe.

Except as we've seen that' simply not how it works. Restricting gun rights just takes away guns from lawful citizens. The criminals don't care about the law so they'll get guns anyway.

Europe is not far off. You're disregarding all the evidence that I'm putting forward and just saying "well Europe is better," without actually supporting your own claims.

In addition to Switzerland, Finland has a very high rate of gun ownership per capita, but a relatively low gun homicide rate. Compare this to Britain, where for a while they had trouble accepting even the police carrying weapons!

You know what the funniest part about this whole argument is? You're so lost in the whole European superiority complex that you've forgotten that Virginia Tech is in the United States, not Europe.

Of course the way we are brought up affects it. If you're taught to fear guns and you don't want to accept the reality that guns exist, you're going to have trouble accepting it when someone does have a gun. If you're brought up understanding that guns are a powerful tool that require responsibility, you will learn to respect them.

What would you rather do if someone had a gun and was shooting at you? Would you just stand there and say "NO FAIR! THAT'S AGAINST THE RULES!"

See, this is the ignorance about guns I'm talking about. Why is that everyone who wants a gun is considered violent? I don't load my house because I am at school and guns are illegal here. But where I live people will get robbed and wait hours before the police can respond. A classmate of mine was strongly anti-gun until her house was broken into and they had to wait hours in their basement for the police to respond. It was even worse when I lived in NYC.

It absolutely does restrain you from having freedom. The freedom is granted through the second amendment of the constitution. Your problem is you feel we shouldn't have that freedom.

I think that there was plenty of warnings that this was going to happen. In 2005 a court ordered that he was a danger to himself that should come up on your background when you go to buy a gun. There were plenty of times where this could have been stopped from happening yet no one did anything. This kid was obviously beaten down until he couldn't stand it anymore plus he had a mental disorder which explains the disassociative personality. Im just glad that he mailed the "manifesto" so that we could see a little peak of what he was going through so we can better help stop this from happening. I also think that teatchers and other adult authorities on a college campus should be able to carry guns because its not like a shooter is going to go shoot up a police station where everyone is armed no they are going to go to a place where no one has anything to protect themselves with.

im very sure this topic might switch to the debate section . this event is not just some big tragedy . justl ike saunders said its pointless . this is anyways going to open up alot more issues in this country . cultural views , political issues , mental/psycholgical views cultural racial standards of living . i`m afraid when he said " he wanted to change the world like Jesus Christ , i think he did ....he`s opened up alot of doors . made an impact on people both negativally and positivally . anyways this type of event has been going on and alot of innocent people have been killed anyways . lets not forget that the media is also at fault for trying to elaborately make this as a big deal .

bash me

this topic should just be moved into the debate section .

Even though I go to college in MA, a rather liberal state, I'm still afraid of backlash against asian communities. It's already begun. Why would the S. Korean president have to apologize for this if he wasn't afraid for political ties and for the Koreans in the U.S.? It's not his fault, yet he wanted to send a delegation to VTech. I've already seen Asians being bashed on facebook. And even though I know that MA should be safe, it doesn't make me any less scared.

So you think that person who killed 33 people in Virginia was a lawful citizen who absolutely deserved the gun he got? That he should have gotten the gun because he had the right to? People buy guns to USE them. And he wasn't a criminal - he was mentally unstable. Had the law been stricter, maybe those 32 wouldn't have died.

I know people in Europe DO have guns. But you wouldn't see many highschoolers or college kids swaying them around. The people who own guns have most often gone through a long process to obtain them. Most people don't like that.

This might come as a shock, but I actually know that Virginia is in the U.S. OH MY!!!

My dad, uncle and grandfather had guns. It's nothing new to me. I just think it's unnecessary if you don't really need it. How many times have you been attacked? And how many times have guns been used just for the purpose of killing (and not self-defense)? Guns are made for one purpose only: to take away a life.

They're called car accidents for a reason :) And I don't think somebody will be randomly shooting at me for no reason in Canada. This is one of the reasons I actually like living here.

I don't need the freedom to shoot 32 people, thanks.

You're missing my point. All I'm saying is that guns should be harder to get. I've heard that in some places in the U.S. you don't even need a license. That's such a wise decision. Absolutely amazing. Let psychos own guns, man. There's nothing wrong with that, eh?

Please everyone, this is such a tragedy, and I know many of you are passionate about your beliefs, whether that's about gun control or about South Koreans. But be respectful. Take it where it's supposed to be. I'm not saying you can't discuss the implications of what happened, but remember, be respectful.
