This discovery is not that great. "Jesus" and "Mary" were two very common first names during Christ's time. There's no way of knowing which Jesus and Mary are buried in that particular tomb. It's sort of like if Christ lived on earth now, and his name had been "John" or "William" or something, and 2000 years from now archaeologists were to find a grave marked "John", it would prove nothing, because there are countless Johns about.
A very common argument I keep hearing... Makes sense, but the argument's still not a very strong one. With all the names found together, it'd be hard for it to be just a coincidence.
QUOTE(Jinny @ Mar 3 2007, 11:39 PM) *
jesus NEVER got married in his life OR had a son --;
And to be honest, this is probably just my lack of knowledge, but what evidence would you use to prove that Jesus never got married?
QUOTE(r o b b i + @ Mar 4 2007, 2:07 PM) *

Jesus was buried, but he physically rose from the dead (and Mary Magdalene found the tomb empty) , so this "finding" would crush my beliefs.
And then the story goes that he rose to heaven right? Did it say that it was his physical body that rose to heaven though?

Eh. You seem a little unsure.

Anyone a little more knowledgeable about that?

Because I'm getting the message that the only reason people deny Jesus ever got married (and had a child) because he was "too pure" to do so.

I don't know. Would his soul just up and leave his body? I don't know.
Well, my point is that I just wouldn't leave out that his actual physical body could have been left behind. I guess that's only assuming one would know that there's more to a person than the material body though.

well the bible didn't say anything about Jesus getting married,
it just tells stories about Jesus, and how Jesus died, and how he went to heaven.
if that picture is supposed to be the tomb, ehh..
i seriously thought Jesus died in some kind of cave thing where they covered it with a stone though
I mean, Jesus wasn't buried in that thing [the rock box thing in the picture]
i'm pretty sure he wasn't

I think the story goes that he was in a cave where it was covered with a stone, and then he was resurrected and his body was no longer found there. And then he rose to heaven.

What makes you think that he couldn't possibly have been buried in such a thing though?

They're not completely sure. They're actually just going by the names on the tombs, I think. But it's because of all of the names that were all there together that makes it possibly the tombs of Mary and Jesus's son.

Oh god, honestly. that's just the stupidest thing i've ever heard of.
There were countless Jesus's and Marys during that time.
It wasn't an uncommon name.
That's just a bad call from the beginning

Yeah right.

This is like people who claim to see the Virgin Mary in subways and marks on walls.

I bet it was some other person named Jesus. It's not a very uncommon name.

I'll reserve my judgement until I see the documentary (which may very well never happen, but who knows) but so far, the whole thing seems more of an advertising campaign to endorse another piece of christian pseudo-science for people to buy rather than a real archeological investigation.

So pigs took flight and I ended up watching it. At the light of new evidence, I am forced to retract my previous statement where I labeled the documentary "a piece of christian pseudo-science".

The word science was totally out of place. It's just a piece of christian pseudo-fanfic, actually. Only instead of reading about it in a crappy website we got to see it on TV. Duh.

A burial place was unearthed in 1980 in one of Jerusalem's suburbs during some construction works in an industrial park. The archeologist Amos Kloner then started to investigate the findings, but he has never claimed to have found the tomb of any biblical character since there's no evidence to support such a premise.

Year is now 2007. James Cameron and Simcha Jacobovici disregard 27 years of investigation and produce a movie with lots of scientists in it that use flashy gear and say the acronym DNA every 5 minutes to prove that said tomb was indeed Jesus & Co. final resting place.

However, all they do confirm is that the human remains found in the tombs are ... human, and approximately 2000 years old. The names were already successfully translated in the late 1990s, by the way. So all in all, nothing new has been discovered, and the hypothesis of the Tomb of Jesus is still a mere unproven theory.

Then the documentary ends, and you realize James Cameron has made you piss away about an hour of your life (around 6 if you have watched Titanic).

There hasn't been a scientific confirmation for such claim yet despite the documentary's title suggesting otherwise. It's better to take it as speculative work for now, in the best of cases.

this isn't a new discovery, this tomb was found in the 80s. Cameron is just making a documentary on it.

I'm pretty skeptical; there have been forgeries in the past. Plus the timing is very suspect.

you know,
if they find his bones,
then he's not god.
not to offend people,
but the bible did say that jesus rose from the dead.
and uhm, they found the tomb earlier, but they had to
video and record everything to say stuff.

and scientists are saying that
james,joseph,moses, and

blahblah(i forgot) are his brothers
and mary is his wife o_o;;

you'll find alot of interesting theories from this,
but some lady from the discovery channel
was like... "you don't have permission to see these tombs."
so they sealed them up again.

bleh. :/

and they were SOOOO close !
i'm agnostic, so i'm interested in every jesus stuff hahah.

and that can be true too.
he's got a point.xxx
