As you know, green onions are the most popular vegetables eaten among the Asian.
I'm talking about uncooked/ lightly cooked green onions. Well-cooked onions are perfectly fine to eat. _smile.gif

http://www.snopes.com/food/tainted/onions.asp

Unfortunately, I didn't know anything about this and I'm a bit aware of eating it. My family had been eating almost every dishes with green onions all the time. My mom told me that it's good for your brain, but I don't believe that. Well, that's not the point. I'm just surprised about the fact that green onions is one of my daily vegetables.

Here's the article:

QUOTE
The Food and Drug Administration has advised the public to consider avoiding raw or lightly cooked green onions in the light of evidence linking them to recent hepatitis A outbreaks.

In September, hepatitis A outbreaks associated with raw or lightly cooked green onions served in restaurants occurred in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia, the FDA said. Another outbreak that so far has involved more than 500 people in Pennsylvania is ongoing. The outbreak has been linked with a major restaurant chain, but the FDA said it has not been tied to a specific food.

The agency said consumers who are concerned about the risk of getting hepatitis A from green onions should cook them thoroughly, which reduces or eliminates the virus. At restaurants and delicatessens, consumers should request that raw or lightly cooked green onions not be added to their food. Foods like freshly prepared salsa and green salads often contain green onions.

The green onions implicated in the Tennessee outbreak apparently came from Mexico, and the FDA has been working with Mexican authorities to assess the situation, officials said. The FDA, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Pennsylvania Department of Health are investigating the Pennsylvania outbreak.

A Pennsylvania Health Department official reported that 510 cases of hepatitis A, with three deaths, had been confirmed to the Pennsylvania outbreak as of November 15, according to an Associated Press report. The official, Richard McGarvey, said more infections were expected because people who contract the disease typically don't experience symptoms for 28 to 30 days.

The FDA said people who have recently eaten raw or lightly cooked green onions do not need to take any specific measures but should monitor their health. Hepatitis A is usually mild and is characterized by jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhea, and fever, officials said. The disease is sometimes severe, especially in people with liver disease.

My mom always cooks those well, so I haven't had to worry about that.
No, I've never had any bad experiences with green onions.

I think that's only hepatitis B..

That article is pretty old, isn't it? 2003. I don't think you'll have to worry about it. And it only mentioned a few states.
Y'know, you can also get hepatitis A from other foods and contaminated water.

You could just get the vaccine for it..

Does your taco bell still add green onions to your tacos? There was an article that taco bell removed the vegetables because it has e coil.

You mean, completely cooked? My mom always add green onions at the last minute into the "asian pan" then cook it for a while.

You mean a wok? Haha.

Well, pretty close to completely cooked. She uses green onions as an actual ingredient while cooking, not just as a garnish like most Western people do. Overcooked green onions turn yellow-y and taste gross.

It said it right on the article--2003.
I don't know if Taco Bell still adds green onions or not because I don't eat there. pinch.gif
But I've heard about the E. Coli outbreak before. It was the lettuce, not onions.

A bag of spinach too! :o

I love spinach dip. Yummmm...

You should try Taco Bell because it's cheap and good. ;D

My mom told me this, " As long you plant your own vegetables, it should be safe to eat.If you buy vegetables from a market, it has too much chemical"

I kind of believe her. Every company are always competing against each other. It's all about puting massive chemical in food. stubborn.gif

That's why my mom grows her own green onions.
