Navy Life, Broken Hearts

I sit there in the sheer winter cold; dark as it is early.

The violins slowly begin to play, that quiet shudder of the strings lets me know I'm alive. A couple notes pass by, and cellos come into play, playing the deep notes in the piece. It's so brilliant, the first thought -- angels are playing.

I'm in a land where nothing is wrong, everything is in its place and no hearts are ever broken. There are meadows that go on for miles, covering many acres of land with nothing but lush grass and beautiful flowers; a wooden post remains, weathered and rotten from a fence that was taken down years before.

The most beautiful birds fly over these meadows, the glimmering, white feathers just illuminate as the sun's rays reflect off their waterproof coating. The sky is the most true blue you could ever see, the clouds are white as snow and perfectly shaped; they truly do look like comfortable pillows I could just sleep on top of.

A distant, but loud horn begins to scream.

It was the sound of a cargo ship pulling into port; I've just been woken up from the most beautiful dream I've ever had in months. And then the harsh reality of life hits me again; there is no such land in existence, hearts are always broken in the real world, there are no blue skies or perfectly shaped clouds, and meadows of such proportions are extinct.

Because I am on Earth. There is nothing I can do about it. But sometimes, I like to dream; I dream of going to heaven, the Utopia I long for, that last Eden which I will never leave. It's ironic, though. I've been to heaven, I just don't know what happened. Maybe, just maybe, I can find it again.

I like the descriptiveness in this story. While reading, felt like I was in that dream and having it shattered. Reminds me of the saying life is a but dream.
