Listen, I'm not racist. I'm just bringing up a topic that I know is on alot of people's minds.
Everynow and then I see these movies, or whatever...people saying that black people can't get anywhere in life because they are lazy, or because they are black they can't get anywhere in life. I was sitting infront of Jeremy's house waiting for him to answer his friggin door. I was thinking about Albany(Where I live for the most part) and how it's just run down. Most of the people that live there are black. I was thinking about how I see all this crap about how black people always say they might as well as just give up and deal with what they got. In movies, or even in real life. It pisses me off because the color of your skin does not affect your brain at all. It's an excuse and not a reason... ...if it was a reason then every black person would be in poverty. Is this not true? And you can't blame it on your environment because there have been many black people who have over come it. So, why do some black people just give up and don't try to succeed? I know not only black people do it, but I'm just bringing this one up first. I'll talk about white people some other time just to be fair. Input please. If this is in the wrong forum, just move it. Thank you. |

Stereotypes and racism.
Black people are no different from asians, whites, hispanics, whatever. Each race and background can acheive whatever dream they wish to have if they work on it. Looks don't matter. Like the saying, "It doesn't matter 30 years from now, what clothes you wore, what car you drove, what people you've dated. What matters is what you learned and how you used it. " People concoct these kinds of weird ideas that black people are poor because of Africa and the amount of poverty there. Yes, black people there are in poverty but that does not go for all black people. To your question on why some black people just give up on success is because some of them actually believe the stereotypes being place on them, causing them to think, "Since everyone says that, even if I do try to succeed, I'm not going to make it anyway so why bother the trouble. " I'm not black but people really need to stop sterotyping everyone. |

I don't know... I live in Schenectady area... it's the same old shit.. a whole neighbor hood full of homeless mixed minorities and white trash. It's not just back people.... it's white trash too. I do see what your talking about. They recently had a documentary on Showtime about what a poor man would do with 100,000 dollars. They gave this random poor guy $100,000.00 cash. He cried and cried because he was so happy, but in the end he spent all of the money and ended up poor again. He was in the same position that he had started in. This really showed me that some people just suck at managing their money. It's not anyones fault but their own. If I had 100,000.00 I would invest half of it, and become rich over the course of 20 years through the compound interest. This guy wasted all of his money. Here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reversal_of_Fortune_(2005_film) QUOTE The documentary begins with the introduction of Ted Rodrigue, a homeless man living under a bridge in California. He begins by describing an average day of "survival" for him, which consists of collecting cans and bottles for recycling in order to eat and buy cigarettes and beer for the day. He informs the audience that an average day brings in about $25, while a good day might see as much as $35. Ted reflects on the better days of his life, when his mother (a former alcoholic) and sisters accepted him. He is shown placing a collect call to his mother, ultimately having the charges denied by his mother. Ted blames his homelessness and lack of family support on their prejudice against him for being homeless and an undesirable childhood. Ted describes his mother as a "bar whore" who often brought strange men home from the bar on the weekends and that at the age of 12, he was given his first beer by his mother at one of her many social gatherings. His ability to "do as he pleases" by not having to answer to any authority figures, keeps him on the streets. Ted informs the filmmakers that he takes a lot of pride in his bike and is shown washing it at a car wash, although it has been over three months since he had a "real" shower. Through his recycling, Ted has befriended an 18-year-old Latino male named Michael, who works at the recycling plant. Once the director pulls you in to the plight of Ted Rodrigue, the film begins to build its plot showing Ted doing his daily dumpster-dive, collecting cans for the day's food, cigarettes and beer when he finds a briefcase amongst the rubbish. Ted stops to brush it off and opens it up slowly and finds that it is stuffed with cash. A note atop the money reads "What would a homeless person do if he were given $100,000?" Shocked and in tears, Ted comes to the realization that he is the recipient of a major amount of cash. What he doesn't realize, however, is that his life may never be the same. Ted almost immediately buys a new bicycle, rents a motel room and takes his buddy Mike to an amusement park. The word gets out among the homeless community and, before you know it, Ted, who once couldn't find a girlfriend because his lack of teeth, now enjoys female companionship in his motel room. As soon as Ted notifies his mother and sisters of his attainment of wealth, they begin to take his calls and his mother invites him to stay with her until he finds his own residence. The family is shown discussing how concerned they are for Ted's welfare. A week after finding the money, and having spent over $2,000, Ted is still in the motel and is asked to speak with an advocate for the homeless. The counselor asks Ted what he thinks about having all of this money, to which Ted replies that he really hasn't thought about it much and that he has too much time on his hands now since he no longer has to recycle. Ted makes plans to leave for Sacramento to stay with his mother, but before leaving, he buys Mike a car and promises to fly his lady friend to Sacramento once he gets there and settled, coyly exclaiming as he gets in to the van to leave for the airport "bang 'em and leave 'em". The following weeks find Ted hanging out at the local bar, his spending averaging $10,000 a week. He then purchases a $35,000 Dodge Ram and another truck for one of his recently acquired girlfriends, rents an apartment and buys furniture. The filmmakers then request that he meet with a financial planner. Ted meets with him, but firmly announces to him that he has no intentions of working and wishes to not plan ahead as he is only concerned with today. Ted states his belief that the financial planner is only after his money and rips up his card. His sisters repeatedly try to convince Ted to seek employment, although he still believes he is "set for life". By this time, Ted has become resentful to the film producers for giving him the money. The film then ends telling the viewer that, six months after finding the money, Ted refuses to disclose his latest bank balance; however, his sisters fear that it is less than $5,000. On a December 1, 2006 airing of the Oprah Winfrey Show entitled: "Are You Ready For a Windfall?", Ted and the producer of the documentary were on the program to promote the documentary and speak on their account of the experiment. When asked by Oprah how much of the $100,000 he still had, Ted replied "none". Ted also mentioned that he is back homeless, and content with his current circumstances. ![]() ![]() |

And I'm not just trying to pick out black people. I know there are all kinds of people who make dumb ass decisions... I've actually met and talked to homeless people. It sucked. But, all I hear all the time is that urban black people are lazy. You know what? I feel it's some what true. I see it. It's not like I don't live far from the city. Josh even said so, and he lives there. You know that there is some truth in all stereotypes right? |

^ naturally otherwise where would such tellings find their source?
However, I think it's about more than just a label. It is society's nature to believe what we are told even though we are the ones generating the stories being fed to us by the media (kind of chicken and egg in that respect). And I believe it's more associated with education than genuine belief in one's ability to better one self. Where I live in London, we have one of the lowest pass rates for any kind of academic qualification (starting at high school level). Here, black, white, purple kids are all in the same boat - they are constantly being undermined by the education system, one which is not entirely willing to help them succeed. Kids require motivation, but if their teachers give up after only putting in 25%, why should the kid bother putting in anymore? And then the reasons for failing start kicking in and yes, I do agree to an extent that racial discrimation in the classroom will always factor into it, but that is just one of a number. And then there's environment. Yes, there are those kids who get out of the 'ghetto', who make great success stories of themselves, but when all your friends are hanging out, chilling after school, not bothered by work and having a good time, what kid won't choose play over work? I coach tennis in an area even rougher than mine, and there was this one kid (yes, black), one of the most naturally gifted tennis players in that whole county and he knew, and they knew it. The club basically took him on as their own son - driving him to matches, giving him free coaching, paying his tournament fees, tennis clothing, feeding him, letting him stay over before a big game. He started when he was 9, not too late to have let the 'bad' influences creep in yet, and he was in this positive environment pretty much five hours a day, six days a week, for the next six years. Then one day, he just stopped going to training and now even his own aunt couldn't tell you where he was. He was given opportunities other kids in that area could only dream about but he threw it away. That's not a stereotype; that was him being unable to fight the way of life his non-tennis playing friends were immersed in. The need to fit in overrides a great deal of ambition when you're a teenager, especially if the education you were provided with was insufficient to encourage you otherwise. And even then, even with support and belief in you, things don't always go right. Stereotypes will always exist but yes, to an extent, they are an excuse for failure, though not always innocent of the fact. P.s., as to people stereotyping themselves, well, yeah, I'll raise my hand to this. A lot of the time, stereotyping is meant as a form of reverse psychology. Unfortunately for me, I'm one of those on whom it provokes the exact opposite effect. If you tell me I can't do something, rather than spurring me on to prove you wrong (maybe it's a wire shortage in my brain but I just can't grasp where the satisfaction in this concept lies), it angers me so that I subscribe to your prescription and so I'll fail just to prove you right, and your subsequent failure to achieve the intention of the application of reverse psychology, will be my success (though obviously, only minor and superficial and largely, to my own detriment) |

well, in a way, i definitely agree with you and in a way, i dont.
i know this has nothing to do with african americans, but..what other artist (music) is in the united states besides for whites and african americans? there arent hardly any other races besides for whites and blacks. but, thats the only thing i can think of that isnt mixed in cultures. |

Well, OF COURSE black people don't fail because they're black. And I'm not saying all of them fail either. There are PLENTY of African Americans who have contributed much more than whites and other ethnicities.
This is just another stupid racial stereotype. Just like 'Asians are smart.' (Although... we are ;) ) |

It's not like I don't live far from the city. Josh even said so, and he lives there. You know that there is some truth in all stereotypes right? Oh I wasn't calling you that. Sorry if you took that the wrong way. I meant by just normal people. Your normal, average Joe would sterotype something and be somewhat racist against something. And yes there is some truth to all stereotypes. If not, where did they think of them in the first place? And yes people do stereotype themselves as well. A lot of asians that I know will leave other asians because they don't live up to the stereotype. I don't know much about homeless people because I don't live in the city (I live a more rural than suburban area in Jersey). Sure there are homeless people in my area, but many of them are well taken cared of by the shelters that are provided by the town. By that I mean with food (Lots of food there), clothing (Lots of that too), medication, etc. So I have never ever in my entire life actually seen a homeless person. (Only in TV) Even on my weekly visits to NYC, I've never seen (also include the car window) a homeless person just sitting there. I think being a homeless person in the city is more dangerous than being a homeless person in my area. Blacks sometimes use the stereotype as an excuse for their actions. It's like... Me: Are you doing work? Dude: No. Me: Why not? Dude: I'm lazy. Me: ... Dude: What do you expect? I'm black! That pisses me off. |

That's not a stereotype; that was him being unable to fight the way of life his non-tennis playing friends were immersed in. Alright. I understand what you are saying. But the fact is that they are not surrounded by bad influences for 100% of their day. Nor 100% of their life. So, again, it's an excuse that they give up on themselves. Sure there is some influence, but it's not an absolute influence. I've had bad experiences in my life, I've been told that I can I can succeed and am a great student. But for the life of me, I can't stick with anything. I have the ability, but I look focus. Let's just agree that it's a choice. I mean, am I wrong? We choose to give up and not further ourselves. I do. I know it's wrong, but I choose ignorance, ignorantly. Haha. I don't know much about homeless people because I don't live in the city (I live a more rural than suburban area in Jersey). I'll take this as my cue to leave my rather brief input, because, I could ramble on about this for days.
Where I come from, you're expected to fail or live up to mediocre standards, regardless of race. Working class families struggle and that's just the way it is. I was fortunate enough to see the other side of things, move out of that environment and be forced to make decision without those circumstances to restrict me. When it comes to stereotypes, especially those that seem to publicly humiliate a given race in the media, I'm angered relatively easily. Not to point to finger at anyone, but I feel as though everyone does an adequate job of perpetuating stereotypes to a certain extent. The notion that African Americans/Black people/those of the Ebony hue (oo, I like the third one) are lazy, good for nothing beings is reflective of an old southern misconception. If, from birth, a person is told that they will never succeed in life, they aren't shown many opportunities for advancement, they're poorly educated and they truly don't know any better, this will happen. Times have changed since early 20th century. Gone are the days where opportunities are limited solely to White people. Although, subtle discrimination still goes on, we are able to get jobs and provide for our families. Unfortunately, unless you were brought up in a middle class income bracket, these opportunities still don't seem to be available. More to come. |

^ agree. That's what I was getting at...less succinctly. And JakeKKing, yeah, it is a choice...to an extent and obviously I don't know how you've grown up and what experiences you've been subject to, but that's precisely half the problem with stereotyping - each case in is individual and while it doesn't justify anyone's behaviour/choice to fail/blaming it on stereotype/racism, I can certainly empathise more with some scenarios than others where the decision to give up rather than persist, is made.
But again, yes, where the reason is stereotype, more often than not, a conscious choice has been made to live up to that. I'm just saying that it's not always without context and so we shouldn't judge each and everyone quite so harshly and on the same all encompassing basis. |

I haven't thoroughly read everything throughout this topic. But I do think that it's dumb that there are certian stereotypes about nationality out there. African Americans aren't the only people who have negative stereotypes. I come from a family with not-so-nice people and my brother used to hang out with a lot of racist people. They were racist to anyone who didn't look like them. It angered me sooo much.
When people themselves say "Oh I'm black, I don't have to do that." I think it's just ignorance. I don't throw around my nationality. But I also think it's crap that people have put up with other people's ignorance too. I know what it's like to be stereotyped from a different aspect, but that's not really relivent to this. I think that if you find a way to create opportunity for yourself that you can find many possibilities. It's hard to create opportunity for yourself, but I think that's a step in proving certain stereotypes wrong. |

Well, it doesn't help that so many of these ignorant assholes are so proud of the fact that they are nothing and contribute nothing. My brother seems to be proud of this fact. In recent years there seems to have been a great increase to these types of people not only in urban areas but also suburban areas in prosperous families. And you wanna know whose fault it is? It's not the government, it's not television, it's not the "Po-Po stoppin' a brotha' from succeedin in this bitch."(Actual quote from a black kid in school.) It's the goddamn f**kin RAP MUSIC!!! f**k Rap Music! It has done nothing but increase the f**kin crime rate, increase the drug use to where every f**kin kid I know does drugs daily, and has increased the hostility towards cops. The term "f**k the Police" has become part of everyday conversation. "187 on an undercover cop" f**k YOU!! I swear if I hear one more black, white, asian, mexican, or puerto rican kid come at me saying "yo, what up son. You see dat bitches ass? Whoo, I could tap dat shit all night. Yo, da f**kin cops done stole my weed again. Assholes. By, the way, I failed 10th grade again, Its aight though son. I'll get my GED and work for a gas station. If only that shit wasn't so hard to do. Shit, you gotta know all dem' numbers kid."
I'm sick of all these motherf**kers complaining how they never got no money and can't afford to live when he buys $200 worth of weed everyweek, buys new clothes and shoes every f**kin day that cost $80 for a t-shirt that you can't even see under the goddamn puffy jacket, GODDAMN I HATE THESE ASSHOLES!!! And it seems like I'm only talking about guys. f**k these stupid women too. They go out with these stupid assholes who cheat on them all the time and have kids when they're 12 and get into fights at the local grocery store cause she found her best friend with her baby daddy on top of their lawn furniture that's set up in their living room., goddamn it, f**k em. I wish all these stupid bitches and stupid motherf**kers could all just die. I'd be happy. I wouldn't have to worry about getting caught in a drive-by every time I'm taking groceries out of the car. Here's the thing about these people. They complain that they can't get a job, yet when they have a job they don't want their job and never do it right and don't care that they're doing it right, I mean it's your fault anyway for having an order at f**kin Taco Bell for five of your friends, I mean five different orders is a lot of different things to pay attention to so instead of double checking I'll just put whatever the f**k I want and charge you more than it should have been then get all in their face if they have the nerve to complain, I mean I did my job, shit, don't matter if I didnt do it right." Mass genocide should be allowed for these f**kin assholes. I would actually say yes to another holocaust just for these useless motherf**kers. Whew, that feels good to let it all out like that. I mean every word of it and truly hope for a world where good people don't have to be afraid to go to their jobs in the city without being mugged on their way home to see their family after a long day of actual work. Instead of welfare, let's just not give them any aid at all. For maybe fifty years it will be pretty tough to deal with and the crime would go up temporarily, but I believe if the army was behind the movement and regular people would just go with it, I think all our problems would be solved. Oh, I would also banish all gangster rap music and gangster rap artists. It is the easiest form of music there is people, thats why theres a new rapper every day. Sure you could say the same thing about rock music, but you know what, people who play rock music actually have to spend years learning how to play instruments and then be able to put those instruments together in a favorable rythym, even bands that suck. I would listen to Fallout boy for the rest of my life if someone would kill all these ignorant people. Whites, Blacks, Asians, Spanish, Indians, Native Americans, all of these people. Just kill them, dont help them because instead of being grateful, all they do is complain about how they don't get helped enough. GET A f**kin JOB YOU f**kin LEECHES!!! |

GET A f**kin JOB YOU f**kin LEECHES!!! f**k EM YEAH!!!!!! f**k RAP!!!! f**k IT~~!!!! I second dis shizznatt!!! |

Shit, you gotta know all dem' numbers kid." I'm sick of all these motherf**kers complaining how they never got no money and can't afford to live when he buys $200 worth of weed everyweek, buys new clothes and shoes every f**kin day that cost $80 for a t-shirt that you can't even see under the goddamn puffy jacket, GODDAMN I HATE THESE ASSHOLES!!! They complain that they can't get a job, yet when they have a job they don't want their job and never do it right and don't care that they're doing it right, I mean it's your fault anyway for having an order at f**kin Taco Bell for five of your friends, I mean five different orders is a lot of different things to pay attention to so instead of double checking I'll just put whatever the f**k I want and charge you more than it should have been then get all in their face if they have the nerve to complain, I mean I did my job, shit, don't matter if I didnt do it right. Though you raise a few good points, you fail to elaborate intelligently, thus making you sound like an ignorant prick with harbored racial hostilities. So does this mean you're going to commit suicide? Since you fit in quite well with the rest of the ignorant, you might want to take your own advice. Even someone outspoken can talk so much and not say a word. If you would actually take the time and pose an intelligent argument; a stoic rebuttal with more substance than constant profanity; I might take you seriously. This is coming from someone that has been raised around gangs, been shot, been stabbed, done dirt, been harrassed by the police, been robbed, lived day to day, etc, etc, etc. Your generalization is all in your head. |

LOL I'm black, I listen to rap music. Never once have I had run ins with the law. I dress in baggy clothes, backwards hats, and plan on getting a diamond in my ear. If I came to school in abercombie and whatever it wouldn't be me. I can also play piano, but wait I listen to rap, Im not supposed to be able to do that. ![]() Say what you will about Rap, Rock , or any other music genre, but I honestly think its a poor excuse and at the end of the day most people need to take responsiblity for his/ her their actions. If Rap or Rock is the burden to all races , then I guess we should also eradicate all movies and video games with violence as this would also be equally contributing to the problem. If this is truly what you want I highly doubt it would solve any of the problems because gangs, killings, bitches, hos, strippers, and prostitutes were all in existance before the conception or rap. Me personally I think if kids had mentors or a decent father figure in their lives they would more likely succeed, and research backs this. If this research is really true then maybe the reason more blacks are susceptible to failure than other races, is due to the fact that blacks are more likely to have a kid out of wedlock than other races, which means in the process a lot of father figures will vanish from some childrens lives. Not a fact, just a theory of mine. |

Despite the somewhat incoherent form of his argument, Jeremy makes a point I agree with to an extent; I would advocate another Holocaust type situation if it meant the genocidal eradication of welfare leechers who feel they are entitled to those social benefits because 'society failed them by failing to provide an adequate education/to give them a cushy job which requires no work and plenty of pay'. But at the end of the day, there are those spoon fed golden opportunities but opt out, and those who will strive their whole life with no gain. That's just the way it goes and you can go on explaining the reasons behind failure all you want but there is general justification since there is no such thing as generalised failure - it happens to every race, either gender, from any social class.
Btw, I also disagree that the blame can be laid at the feet of music/television/video games and other forms of media. They may exacerbate the situation but they are not the root cause. |

Lets get something straight, okay. I'm not saying that rap music is the only reason we have gang violence, I'm not an idiot. When I wrote what I put above, I wrote it in haste in about 5 minutes. If I had thought that my idea would be interpreted that I'm saying rap music is the direct result of all the drugs and crime, I would have gone into a much longer descriptive. I apologize for overestimating people and will state the obvious much more frequently.
As far as saying that I have rascist views, your a f**kin moron dude. Not once did I say it was all the blacks or all the spanish, or all the whites. I said it's everybody. Every ignorant, lazy, gangster lowlife that I see and feel like crossing the street just to avoid. Don't get me wrong, I'm no pussy but from what I've actually witnessed(not saw on television or heard about in music), these people stab or shoot first and ask questions later. They have no conscience or morality. To call me a rascist is actually telling more about yourself for thinking I was only talking about blacks. I know as many gangster, lowlife blacks as I do gangster Puerto Ricans or Gangster white kids. I also know many black guys who think that kind of life is retarded and would rather work for money than steal it. If I were talking about all black people and all Puerto Ricans, my mother would die, my sister would die, my niece, nephew, brother in law, all my uncles and my aunt, and my grandfather would all be included in my second holocaust. I am 1/2 Puerto Rican and rather proud of that fact, yet I don't go out and get high and get arrested and get into fights every day. My brother in law is black and though he treats me like an a-hole, he is one of the smartest people I know and has provided a great life for my sister and they're two kids. He grew up in a bad neighborhood in Rochester and my sister grew up in apartment projects in Brooklyn. Neither of them to my knowledge have ever been in a gang or gotten into fights over lost weed or beat some kids ass in front of a gas station for his cell phone. Of course there are many different types of ignorant people. There's also the white trash types which I unfortunately am also related. My father's side of the family is comprised of a bunch of (white) people who enjoy doing drugs, drinking until they are incoherent, and would rather fight you to prove a point than sit down and discuss it. I have two sisters currently pregnant where one of them is going out with her first childs father but pregnant with her recently ex-boyfriend's child who was married(and she knew he was) and the other isn't 100% sure that the baby is her boyfriends. I have a brother that has been in and out of jails and homes for being violent and abusive. Why? I grew up in the exact same house as him, I lived in the same areas and pretty much socialized with the same people. He does not have ADD or any of those other excuses, rather he just has a violent personality. So f**k him. The point of this is that violence is a choice, laziness is a choice, working for a living is a choice. The reason Ichose to talk about the gangster ignorants instead of the white trash is because I was replying to a post created after Jake observed the neighborhood I currently live in. Yet I have a job, I don't do drugs, I've never been arrested. What makes me different? I mean I am Puerto Rican, shouldn't I be in a gang or something? |

^ I think Brandon was simply referring to the cursing which littered your post as opposed to accusing you directly of being racist. He actually agreed with some of what you were saying.
I don't think it's necessary for anyone to elaborate on the details of their social environment to prove a point. Laziness, violent/criminal behaviour, working for a living may indeed be a choice but sometimes it is presented more than a little less favourably, in circumstances very much similar to those you have described. What one chooses to do with themselves at that given time, is just their decision. While I will be hypocritical and admit that I am guilty of this, we shouldn't judge them for the choices they make. After all, we could be a slip and turn away from being in the very same predicament and who knows how we will respond? Seeing others make the 'stupid' decision empowers us to do otherwise and in the same turn of hand, makes us complacent. We can be (though aren't necessarily) fooled into thinking we would never make the same 'mistake' but it only takes a lowering of the guard once to fall into a routine we may not necessarily know how to climb our way out of. I am a firm believer in our choices making us who we are (just a belief and not one everybody is compelled to subscribe to), but just because we make a few bad ones, doesn't make us unredeemable for life. Obviously I say this, but those who make no attempt to make amendments, well, again, genocide for the leeches isn't an idea I am completely opposed, whatever rights all are entitled to in the name of equality. |

Well, in my own opinion, I don't think movies or music have anything to do with the violence committed nor do violent video games. People have there own minds on what they think is right and wrong, they know there in the wrong and they make there own mistakes and they influence themselves.

Haha. That kid aint no gansta son. Hell, he's a bitch if I ever saw'd one. My culture's not a trend Being Black is not in So for you it's just a phase you'll just have to transcend I couldn't be more proud of who I am, where I've come from and where I'm going. I'm not trying to be a gangsta, kid. When you're in my shoes, you realize how you're just talking out of your ass. You tell me I'm not a gangsta, well I'm not, although I have an M16A4 in arms reach and a 9mm in my side holster. You act as though you're tough as hell because you made a few points, failed to expand, babbled on, got mad when people didn't agree with you and then tried to direct focus elsewhere. Nice try, but you're talking to a combat veteran. |
