I think they put a black layer around the pic and just played around with the opacity(:

What about it?
All they did was make the background grey or put a dark color over it. Unless you mean how the middle of the picture is normal. What you can do is use the marquee tool and then select the part you don't want colored. Then go to select > inverse. Then make a new layer (layer > new layer). Then after that just fill edit > fill or just use the fill-ish tool and fill the layer. Then play around with whatever. |

^ Explain exactly what you want ... You can't just say for that image. That image was created with creativity. Unless the author did it I doubt there is an exact tutorial for it. If you have photoshop just read my post that should get you the basics. Otherwise you can tell the program you have and someone can give you a method.
Tutorials are more on the basic and overall concept. You have to use your own knowledge to come up with specific things.. |

Over the original photograph, make a new layer. Take your brush and change the color to 000000 and paint on the new layout. Then go to your layer palate and tone the opacity down to like 20 or even lower. Then while on the same layer take your selection box type tool and make a square and then press delete on your keyboard.
