1st: You need animation software to do that... like Imageready, or Animation Shop 3. Once you have that, you make a graphic, place that one in one frame, then change the colors of that one word, and place that in the next frame after the first. Then save as a .gif.

2nd: In your image program, make a new layer and set it's mode to Overlay. Then use a series of white-colored brushes, and violà!

First, there is an edit button so please don't double post. Second, for the abstract thing why don't you just get brushes for it?

What it looks like to me is just a whole bunch of brushes scrunched together with some white brush on top.
