This woman's father organizes people to go to the funerals of soldiers from iraq, holding signs saying "thank god for dead soldiers".

"God is punishing this nation, and one of his wepons of choice is sending your children home from battle, dead."

How do all of you feel about that? Do you think that these people have the right to intrude on something as solemn as a funeral, to shame these people and the dead soilder? Do you guys think that God is really "punishing the nation"?

I'm not condoning the war, and i'm DEFINATLEY not agreeing with this woman or her "church", but i also do not believe that it's the soldiers' fault we're there.

Quite frankly i can't believe insane people like that exsist.

*i believe this goes in the debate section, but i appologize if it's in the wrong place*

She has her own opinion, yes, and I believe it's a little bit swayed by something mental going on in her head. I don't mind her protesting, but at someone's funeral? That is where I cross the line. I don't care how much of a right she has. If she was at my friend who fought and died in the war's funeral, I would be in jail right now.

And she would be in hell.

I actually saw that video on myspace before I even saw this topic posted. My views? I think she is sick, not a real Christian and is giving Christians a bad name.

This should serve as a warning to the power of faith as foundation.

I think this is the real issue in contention. Faith and beliefs are abstract...values, if you will. Both are slippery creatures subject to much change and development. Numerous incidents can shape our faith. And who can say which is right or wrong? Psychotic, sick, crazy, evil people aside, you can take two perfectly reasonable people, and they could sit on perfectly opposite sides of this fence. Who's right is it to say who is right or not?

My case in point is this: yesterday, in my criminology class, we were discussing a case of an island (which actually exists) where the men were regularly having sex with girls of 10. The men didn't seem to realise they were doing anything 'wrong', and the girls didn't complain. Now, I do believe in a great many countries now, this would be seen as paodophilia. But if these people were born into this kind of society where this type of conduct is the norm, on what grounds do we march in there and convict them all of child molestation and the like?

I agree that the proper rites and respect are due every grieving family and I am UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES condoning the acts of this woman; I am simply arguing the theory behind her behaviour and people's condemnations of her. (I condemn her too, but I also realise that she has a right to her beliefs)

That lady is coming to protest at our school and a few churches in our town.

We're performing The Laramie Project.

Her father, Fred Phelps, protested the funeral of Matthew Shepard, the boy who was the victim in the hate crime, and the people who compiled the play put him in there. He claims that they misquoted him and put him in a negative light, so their church goes and protests every performance they hear about. (There's other reasons, too.) The school is getting the police involved to make sure they don't come on school property. *sigh*

Ah, it's the Phelps cult! The pride of Kansas!

[in case you didn't pick up on it, most Kansas residents, including myself, deplore these psychotic pariahs]

I must have been high when I made that last post; I stand by my arguments but I really have no idea how such "clarity" and rationale was even possible in a situation so emotionally involved as this.

I went to Korea and got shot at. I'm headed to Iraq to get shot at. And I'm doing this to protect the rights of people like her. If there were no military and our government was still this reckless, we'd be dead by now.

Do you think most Marines, Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen like leaving their families? Do you think I want to walk around in 120 degree weather with 100lbs on my back because its fun? Do you think I want to die before my parents? Of course not but joining the military is less about serving your country and more about bettering your own life. People like her make me sick. I'm sick of conservatives and I'm damn sure sick of liberals. Everyone has something to say but very few do anything about it.

QUOTE(Acid Bath Slayer @ May 9 2006, 1:55 PM) *
I think she's a great christian. Rather strong in her beliefs and very assertive. For the most part, she is trying to more closely follow those parts of the Bible that moderate christianity simply ignores. Makes sense if you are going to proclaim faith in God. But, my favorite part about this is that she believes in God just like any other christian in just the same way; using faith. It's not like a moderate christian is ever going to be able to have a meaningful dialouge with the cruel bitch; They both know they're right cause they got faith. rolleyes.gif

This should serve as a warning to the power of faith as foundation. We shouldn't be furious with only this woman and then allow others to make the same cognitive follies.

I hope someone intrudes upon your funeral.

In other notes, that woman is sick; she gaves a horrible reputation for Christians. As well as many other Christians. sigh*
