One Killed In N.J. Plane Crash
(AP) WAYNE, N.J. A small plane crashed into the driveway of a home and burst into flames Monday night, killing at least one person on board, officials said.

The crash occurred around 7:45 p.m. on Nellis Drive, state police said. Firefighters were able to quickly douse the flames, and investigators were searching through the wreckage for clues as to the cause of the crash.

While state police said at least one person was killed, it was not immediately clear how many people were aboard the plane.

Bill Maer, a spokesman for the Passaic County Sheriff's Department, said the plane was a single engine Beechcraft.

He said Wayne police and sheriff's department officials were searching outlying areas to see whether anyone had ejected from the plane.

Maer described the area as residential and said the plane hit the driveway of a house but didn't hit the house itself.

"The neighbors came out and tried to be helpful, but there was a fairly significant fire," Maer said.

It did not appear that anyone on the ground was injured, officials said, but several roads around the crash scene remained closed to traffic late Monday night.

Beverly Margolies, who said she lives across the street from where the plane crashed, said she first heard a sound similar to a loud firework, followed by a much louder sound that she likened to a truck crashing into something.

"I ran outside and that's when I saw the plane," Margolies said. "It was a roaring fire. I thought it was going to hit the house."

James Aurelio, a neighborhood resident, was having dinner with his family when they heard an explosion and ran outside.

"I saw a ball of flames," Aurelio told The Record of Bergen County. "The entire cockpit was on fire."

Information on the person killed in the crash, including their identity, was not immediately available.

sad.gif I live near a small airport, so this happens periodically, but usually not as violently. R.I.P. to the victim.
