Fla. Boater Stabbed in Chest by Stingray
By Associated Press

Thu Oct 19, 9:21 AM

LIGHTHOUSE POINT, Fla. - An 81-year-old boater was in critical condition Thursday after a stingray flopped onto his boat and stabbed him, leaving a foot-long barb in his chest, authorities said.

"It was a freak accident," said Lighthouse Point acting fire Chief David Donzella. "It's very odd that the thing jumped out of the water and stung him. We still can't believe it."

Fatal stingray attacks like the one that killed "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin last month are rare, marine experts say. Rays reflexively deploy a sharp spine in their tails when frightened, but the venom coating the barb usually causes just a painful sting for humans.

James Bertakis of Lighthouse Point was on the water with his granddaughter and a friend Wednesday when the stingray flopped onto the boat and stung Bertakis. The women steered the boat to shore and called 911.

Surgeons were able to remove some of the barb, and Bertakis, who also suffered a collapsed lung, underwent surgery late Wednesday and early Thursday, the Miami Herald reported on its web site.

Ellen Pikitch, a professor of marine biology and fisheries at the University of Miami, who has been studying stingrays for decades, said they are generally docile.

"Something like this is really, really extraordinarily rare," she said. "Even when they are under duress, they don't usually attack."

OMG how the hell? IT JUMPED ON TO THE BOAT, i dont get it. I think it has something to do with global warming lol seriously, animals react to that kind of thing. I dunno but that is my guess.

But the stingray launched its barb and was able to get it to the victim's chest.
wow crazy stuff, they said this was really rare and crazy how it happened twice in such a short time from steve irwins death.

how the heck did the sting ray make it onto the boat!?!
anyways... i really hope people won't start assuming sting rays are violent killers now, because attacks are super rare. (^ all the same, i can't believe there's been steve irwin/this 81 year old man within such a short period of time either.)

i hope he doesn't die...

I heard about this yesterday morning. Even though Steve Irwin is dead everyone wants to be like him.
Sorry, that was mean.
But I guess he was trying to get it out the boat when it stung it. I guess this will be a lesson that if a sting ray gets in your boat don't try to pick it up and throw it out.

Great. This is going to end up like shark attacks a few years back. One incident gets some T.V. time and they all start showing up. It's still pretty rare, despite what the media might try and persuade you to think.

if it's able to jump out of the surface and into a boat, it might be able to jump again and reach your chest.. holy hell I would shoot it, instead. f**k animal protection. I wanna live.

Stings rays are actually known for jumping capabilities for you non believers but thats what i heard on the news, it sounds weird.

BUT THE GUY DIDNT DIE, HE DIDNT PULL OUT THE BARB, SO IT SAVED HIS LIFE. STEVE IRWIN PULLED HIS OUT THAT IS WHY HE DIED.

^ Why would leaving it in not kill you?
Loss of blood maybe? That is interesting though.

And wow, this is crazy.
Its good he didnt die though, I wish Steve Irwin would've been as lucky. :[

^ Total ditto. Some people are just lucky, I guess.

Okay one thing we've all learned from the recent two stingray attacks; STAY AWAY FROM THOSE RAYS!

that's because if you pull it out, the blood in your heart would start to flow out, leaving you bleeding to death.

now we know.

stingrays were jealous that the Wright brothers made something that would make people be able to fly.

and now they know how.
