when you are asian having asian parents...

it is probably impossible to not be compared by other asian people who have grades or skills a lot better than yours.

My mom believes I'm just about the only vietnamese
girl that doesn't speak vietnamese..

laugh.gif I'm a living breathing disgrace to them and they
won't take me to our home land vietnam for that reason.

me: can we go to vietnam?
mom: how are you going to talk to your relatives?
me: you translate while I speak english. Simple enough.
me: or tell them I'm chinese and adopted out of pity!
me: Shi-ki-nom-i! Uhh shai seng jhong!! See it'll work.
mom: ... You look vietnamese.
me: tell them after eating so much vietnamese food
I look vietnamese more then chinese. thumbsup.gif

And the conversation goes on and on until I give up
trying to convince my mom to let me go to vietnam.
pinch.gif It's not fun being a disgrace.

That really sucks... I have never been compared to the other kids at school.

My parents have always told me to do my best, and try harder at when I'm good at. They always encouraged me to develop my talents (drawing, computers, math, singing).

The whole Asian thing sounds like it really sucks. I see my girlfriends father beating her up about her grades all the time, and she has a 90+ average... I think it's a bit ridiculous. I encourage her to do as well as she possibly can is school. I definitely think that it's important, but there are some things in life that some people will just never excel at.

I personally believe that society has given people this idea that they need to be a jack-all-trades type of person. This is ridiculous. Everyone has their own God given gifts. If your simply not good at something you shouldn't have to worry about it or be pushed to excel in something you suck at.

There's a shortened old folk's tale about a duck and a rabbit:

It was the yearly forest Olympics. The duck competed in the swimming competition, and the rabbit competed in the running competition. The duck and the rabbit both achieved a gold medal, saw each other, and were jealous. The duck wanted to run, and the rabbit wanted to swim. They both wanted to show each other up in the following years competition. The rabbit practiced swimming and the duck practiced running.

Eventually the day came. The rabbit and the duck signed up for both the running and swimming competitions with great confidence. First came the running competition.

I'm the best runner in all the forest, thought the rabbit.

I've been practicing so hard, this will be easy., thought the duck

The gun went off, and the race was on. The duck ran hard, but so rabbit. In the end, both of them tied for the finish, but neither of them received a medal for their efforts. All the other forest animals had easily passed them. The rabbit could no longer run like he used to.

"HA", said the duck, "I showed you!"

"Just wait and see", said the rabbit.

The swimming competition ended in much the same way.

In the end, they ended up with a rabbit that couldn't run and a duck that couldn't swim.

The moral:
Practice the things that your good at and develop your gifts, or you may end up with nothing. Parents shouldn't compare you to someone who is simply better than you at something, or force you to excel at something that you simply aren't good at and never will be.

"I BET SYMPHONY CLEANS HER ROOM."
"I BET RAYNA TELLS HER PARENTS EVERYTHING."
"I BET YOU LITTLE SCHOOL FRIENDS GET GOOD GRADES."

All the time. It's extremely annoying. They compare me to themselves when they were young and how I'm stupider than they were.

This is the only argument that we always come out laughing from. First off, I compare MYSELF to someone else, and I say, idk, hypothetically, "But James gets to stay out till 3 in the morning!" and my parents say, i don't care what James does..or something like that. Then they'd be like "doesn't that kid that lives up the street get A's in that class?" and me, being as witty as I am, answer "yea, but James gets to stay out till 3 AM..." then we start laughing our asses off...yea

fun times...

Nopes, not really.

In that sense, my parents were more focused on making me be a kind of individualistic go-getter rather than have me look up to someone else and try to match/surpass its achievements.
