QUOTE(ComradeRed @ May 27 2004, 7:45 AM) Nope. Brown Univerisity, an IVY LEAGUE SCHOOL, does not require Science in its core curriculum. Well, I'm surprised. With their medical program as one of the strongest emphasis in the University, and they do not require science? Interesting. I don't know though, if I happen to go to that school, and not take science at all while everyone else does even though it is optional... hehe, I would consider myself to be one of the most ignorant people. |

Well in England, when you're in the last two years of high school, you can take just 4 subjects of your choice. I take mathematics, further mathematics, physics and chemistry. Other people take things like English, economics, French, Spanish, geography, biology, politics, etc. - basically any four they like out of a range of subjects.

The great thing about Brown is that they don't HAVE A CORE CURRICULUM. lol, you can take whatever you want (based on major). |

Science really contradicts some religions and I think that's a good thing because where would the world be today if religion dominated everything? O_O

i can tell you exactly where we would be.....you remember that time before the Renaissance....the Dark ages it was called that because there was no scientific advancement during that time.....or at least not much...that was because the Monarchs(Kings) where always controlled by the Roman Catholic Church and nething Secular was forbidden....when someone finally moved against the the church that was when the Renaissance Age began...or Age of Enlightenment....this was because Art and Science became extremely important and everyone began to question the power of the church....it was that time period that you countrys founding fathers looked at and decided that the Church and State needed to be separate so prevent other Dark Age like effects......so when i think of what it would be like if religion dominated everything...i get scared because the Religion is nothing bout Organized brainwashing.....sorta like school but of the Governments benefit.....

I think science shouldn't be optional. It's important for us to have the basic knowledge of us because we would possibly use it in the future. If it was optional, there would probably not be any doctors or scientists (i'm being vague, but ya get the point). So yeah...

there are core subjects that everyone should take, that's kind of the whole point of mandatory schooling. like if science wasn't mandatory, then english and math wouldn't be...and everyone would be stupid and illiterate

I think science should be a requirement because if you aren't exposed to it fully then you won't really know what's going on. The news doesn't cover the topics extensively and most of the time the media shows you only what they want to show you. However, the kinds of science classes you can take should be optional. There are many different sciences in my school and you can pick the one you think would be best for you. I'm sorry, but i don't think you should leave out such an important subject.

with science, we can learn more about the world around us; maybe we're capturing the next einstein's interest with our science books, who knows, right?
anyway, it's everything around us, and the basic base for our learning... kinda. basically, without it, we wouldn't be able to continue on our technology or take control of the things we do, like genetics and cloning. jobs ranging in the science field would decrease..much, if students don't take science classes now; technology as we know it could go byebye...we could be ruining the world and ecosystems but still be making it a better place and cleaning it up for the better, you know? |

Science and Math both relate to each other closely don't they? So I guess I'd rather like it if Science was required. Now if all subjects were optional, we'd have a 75% dumb world. Because not that many people want to take math and science. They'd all take Gym, or English or something like that. So yes, science should be required in the school cirriculum.

I believe science in the curriculim should be compulsory since, of course, learning science in high school and college provide the basics on the understanding of the world we are exposed to.
