Does anybody think that now is the perfect time for Sony to re-launch Betamax? DVD's are in, and people just have to give up on their VHS, but if they put a thing in the new Betamax players that allow VHS to play, as well as obviously releasing some new Betamax tapes, it could work well!
Your thoughts? |

But no new VHS tapes are being made.

Questions: Why would people buy Betamax tapes when they could just buy DVDs? Why would Sony want to push Betamax again when DVDs are a much newer—and digital—technology?

Just kidding. |

I can answer that question-DVD's scratch far too easily. Tapes are actually strong. Also, with the way I would programme it, you wouldn't have to throw out your old VHS tapes, or transfer to a DVD Player.

^ But then kids like to pull out the film and tangle it up and stuff.
VHS tapes are too bulky and they're ugly. The video quality isn't too good on it either. DVDs are more convenient. A lot of people have DVD burners and players on their computers. It'd be easier just to stick to DVDs, IMO. |

Yeah, but that's different.
Blu-ray and HD DVDs have better features than DVDs and HD is in right now. VHS and Betamax are old and they don't have as many features as DVDs. |

I have a feeling Blu-ray will fail just like Betamax, Mini-disks, and UMDs. HD-DVD already has a head start because the common Joe is already familiar with DVDs.

You seem to forget, also, that Betamax tapes were conveniently smaller than VHS ones. Plus, I'm sure it's not to hard to put all HD stuff onto the tapes.

It is, actually—DVDs (and, by extension, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs) hold a lot more data than tape-based systems. Plus, with Betamax, you'd lose the interactive menus. Not to mention that tapes are analog, and DVDs are digital, which means they look and sound a lot better on modern home theatre systems than analog tapes. |
