A question that I've seen brought up a couple of times: "Is pride a positive or a negative?"
What is your opinion on this? Is pride is harmful, or can it benefit you and/or others?

Yes, I know it could benefit your sometimes and hurt you other times, but if you could only choose one or the other, what would your support be?

My two cents:
I personally think pride, overall, is a negative. You tend to be ignorant and refuse to learn a lesson even though it's good for you, just because it's embarrassing, or something along those lines. Sometimes if you're really up over your head *coughKanyeWestcough* you tend to think your are better than you really are, sometimes even flawless. Even though we all know you aren't. And sometimes there's a case of insecurity. You don't share your knowledge because you don't want to everyone know your "secrets to success" because you want to be on top, and everyone else below you.

Yeah, that was a more like if you're "full of pride," but that's all I've got to say for now.

My class was discussing white pride a while back.. A lot of people mentioned that it's negative. I mean, look at the KKK and the Nazis..

I don't think there are times when it benefits others. All I can think of is Affirmative Action, but that's not really related.
There are a lot more examples in which pride does more harm than good.

It partly depends on your environment. But usually if you have too much of something, it harms you in the end. So I would say that having pride harms you.

I find that pretty ironic coming from someone who has a character that embodies militance and Black pride is his avatar and signature; who is a character in a cartoon that stresses pride of self while satirizing race relations in our society; the character, in fact, was meant to be a spinoff of Huey Newton; but whatever.

semicolonsemicolonsemicolon

I'm proud of where I came from. I'm proud of who I am. I'm proud. Period.

Is there anything wrong with it? Only if you care that much about how your pride is perceived.

Um, please read the original post people. mellow.gif The issue here isn't about racial pride. It's about pride in general. Let's stay on topic.

Well if you really had self-respect, why would you need to have pride?
Wouldn't it make more sense to be humble rather?

Self respect brings about pride.

Example...

I know a 23 year old virgin. He's not a homebody that's afraid to swear, drink or chase the girls, but he refuses to have sex until he's found the woman that he's going to spend the rest of his life with. When questioned, he replies, "Because I respect myself and I respect her and won't let some fake titties change that." That's a perfect example of self-respect, but he's also proud of his own willpower (even if he doesn't say it).

Pride is more than just bragging or being outright arrogant.

Pride is really just a balancing act, just like everything else. Too much of it is never good, but you always have to have a little bit of it to keep yourself going. I think overall pride is a good thing, but it really is a matter of how you show that pride. If you scream it out to the world, then that's just stupid. But if you keep it to yourself, then that can't be such a bad thing.
