I searched and I found no topics on this subject, so here goes..

Okay, so I'm trying to help out my friend. She's seventeen years old and her and her boyfriend of ten and a half months have had sex. But only twice, and this happened within the last two months. Apparently her mother suspects that she's no longer a virgin and is threatening to get her checked. My friend doesn't want her mom to find out or else she might get kicked out of the house or something along those lines. sad.gif

I told her that they would mainly check to see if her hymen was intact. But we all know that checking the hymen isn't a very reliable source for indicating a female's virginity. You can break your hymen by certain physical activities, the use of a tampon (right?), and some girls are even born without hymens.

She asked me if there was any other way that they can tell if you're a virgin or not, besides examining a girl's hymen. And well..I don't know.

Is there? ermm.gif My friend was freaking out and wouldn't stop crying over the phone. sad.gif

I don't think so. Even if she goes to a doctor, its confidential. They can't tell her parents.

I found this:

The hymen, a membrane covering the external opening of the vagina, is usually present in girls or women until something--like penetrative sex or masturbation--has ruptured it. During a gynecological exam, a doctor would be able to see whether or not a girl has a hymen. But lack of a hymen alone does not necessarily indicate that intercourse has occurred. Some girls and women rupture their hymens during jostling sports like horseback riding, for example.
My question is whether you are trying to hide the fact that you are sexually active from your gynecologist. This information is important for your gynecological health care provider to know. If you would like the information kept confidential, most practitioners would be happy to respect your privacy. Ask about your doctor's policy on confidentiality, but it's probably in your best interest not to withhold this information.

some of the posts kind of made me laugh, since their like yelling at the mom. laugh.gif

it is true that tampons can break someone's hymen, and other physical activies and of that sort, and it is true that some people aren't born with them. and checking if it is in tact or not isn't really reliable because of that. and other than that the only way to really find out is just asking, there's really no other real physical test that someone can perform. other than a lie detector test.

& yea what she said^ is true to never hide anything from a gynecologist because it is confidential, and it is very important to tell that doctor the truth.

I used to ride horses religiously and that's how I broke my hymen. So yeah, sex isn't the only thing that breaks it.

I know there's that confidentiality clause and everything, but are you sure it applies to minors? Idk, I really don't have that much experience with gynecologists.

I'm sure her mother wont kick her out just for having sex. She might threaten and I'm sure she'd be angry if she knew the truth, but I doubt she'd be kicked out.

So they don't check for anything else other than the hymen then, huh? I thought so..but I wasn't sure. 'Cause I don't have any experience with a gynecologist myself. ermm.gif

Wow. Just an opinion, but I don't believe in sex before marriage. It was a mistake to have sex with her boyfriend. Don't lie to your parents; they are the best source of help possible.

saying that it was a mistake is an opinion as well... as is saying that they are the best source of help possible.
usually, parents mean well, but it seems that you've never had your parents pissed off enough to kick you out - whereas, i have, and it looks like this girl we're talking about could as well.

why is her mom threatening her to get checked?
what does she want her to do, say "all right, i did it with whoever?"

my parents thought i had sex as well (but i didn't) and had me go to a doctor who pronounced me as "normal." i have no idea if my hymen's there or not, because i don't exactly check. my mom thought that was good enough though.

I really don't think you're qualified to judge whether or not it was a mistake for her to have had sex with her boyfriend. You don't know them, you don't know the circumstances... you really don't have any room to form an opinion, other than the fact that you don't believe in sex before marriage.

And even so, you don't have a place to say that what they did was a mistake. But of course, all that is IMO.

^I have to agree.. Besides, I was asking about virginity testing. Not personal opinions of whether or not what my friend and her boyfriend did was a mistake or not.

Everyone will have different opinions, of course, but like I said, that's not what I was asking for.

Anyway..my boyfriend's grandma used to be a nurse and she said that other than checking the hymen, the gyno can also check to see if there's scarring/tears. Can you get that from rigorous activities/sports and tampons too? I doubt it, but..I know you can from sexual intercourse and masturbation though.. blink.gif

^understood.

Anyways, I suggest she goes to a clinic to get help. Of course, it does depend on what state you live in. Here in California, they have clinics where teens are allowed to go in & have a pregnancy or intercourse check for free without having their parents know.

If your state does have those kinds of clinics, then your friend should probably go to one and ask for help. They'll give you tons of info & stuff.

I've learned about this kind of stuff at school. About the clinics, I mean.

^ She's talking about a VIRGINITY test, not a pregnancy test.

Hm. Scarring and tears. I'm pretty sure you can't get that from playing vigorous sports because ... uh.. most sports don't involve things getting stuck up a female's vagina.

But she can always blame it on vigorous masturbation!

Haha, I suppose not. I guess I was more questionable about the tears rather than the scarring. But yeah. laugh.gif

So I guess all of this was solved. Although Moonstuck, I don't want to call you out or anything, but perhaps read the first post and fully understand it before replying pinch.gif You kind of made the topic go off topic.

gynecologists can tell that you've had sex, from that exactly. they can see if your vagina is teared or scarred. im quite sure that you can only get that from having sex, so yeah. there's no point in lying because they are specialized in that and will know either way. if your friend is going to the gynecologist to get "checked", then she has nothing to worry about because the gynecologists won't tell her parents. it's confidential.
