The funny thing is, that the Apple board is sitting praying to god that they do not launch it. Hoping that something will go wrong, and Microsoft will throw it on the back burner like they did with web browsers. If Microsoft wants the market, they will take it.

As John McAfee once said “When you are up against Bill Gates and his money and he is following the strategy. The best bet is to get into another business. Just say ok, forget it I will do something else with my life. Because you can not compete with him.”

Aside from Windows, in what areas has Microsoft been successful? There's a myth that Microsoft dominates any market it touches, but this simply isn't true. Has Microsoft taken over the server market? The console gaming market? The PC handheld market? The embedded systems market? The cell/smartphone market? Not at all.

There's little to no evidence to support your claim that the Apple board is praying Microsoft does not launch the Zune. Most critics have panned the Zune, whereas Apple has a solid product. In this case, it's Microsoft that clearly needs to play catch-up, not Apple—and it's likely going to be a fight for second place, not first.

I've been wondering for a while why they haven't put the radio feature in the iPod. I think there would be a lot of people that would like that feature.
I remember when I was younger and the walkman got the radio in it. All the cool kids had one, lol.

Well, lets see. The Server Market a large market for Microsoft. I am sure you can find any site that runs Windows Server. Slowly Linux/Unix has been taking over, and I soon see that changing as well. The Gaming Market is not a monopoly for anyone, there is no one company that owns the entire Gaming Maket. Most companies in the gaming market have been doing it for a while, the Xbox is very new, and was made successful within only a few years. The handheld market no longer exsists, PDAs are a thing of the past. Cell phones do all that PDAs did do. Which brings up Palm Treo and Blackberrys new phone running the Windows Mobile OS.

No, I do not have any evidence to support what I said about the Apple board, and I do not need it. It is a opinion, I don’t need to support my opinion with facts, only if it need to be supported by facts. The Zune, and quote me on this if you want, it will make a bite in the market. And, lets do not forget how well Microsoft has played catch up many times before, and you know what ended out of that? $150 million dollars of Apple stock going to Bill.

That's all a bunch of baloney. The Xbox is becoming successful? Yeah, sure, if you consider losing a few hundred million dollars "successful". The only reason it's not dead is because Microsoft has a lot of money to dump into it. (Not to knock the Xbox—I like the Xbox a lot—but let's be honest, it hasn't exactly paid off for Microsoft yet, and it possibly never will.)

As for servers, I'm not sure what you mean about Linux/Unix "slowly taking over". Unix has been used on servers for far longer than Windows. Take a look at statistics—Unix is pretty far ahead. Even Microsoft's IIS hasn't caught on—Apache servers far more webpages. And in the high-performance computing segment, almost no one uses Windows. So I'd wager that, aside from the PC market, Microsoft's forays with Windows into other segments has been mediocre, if not outright unsuccessful.

As for your "opinion", you stated it as though it were a fact; and generally, good, worthwhile opinions are backed up by facts, unless you're an expert in the field in your own right (which isn't the case here, to be frank). If the Zune makes a bite in the market, it will only be because Microsoft has a monopoly to throw behind it—and I doubt it will even be a big bite.

And as a final question, when has Microsoft successfully played catch-up? DOS/Windows didn't have to catch up to anyone, it was already a market standard. Word, and eventually Office, didn't have any real competitors. I still contend that whenever Microsoft has to actually compete, it doesn't do a very good job at all. Frankly, the company is quite mismanaged—the massive delay in Vista is but one symptom of the company's management troubles.

All I have to say is Microsoft > Apple. XD.gif

But, at the same time, iPod > Zune, for now.

And as for your comment, Micheal, on the X-Box making Microsoft lose millions, I believe you are referring to the money invested. Sure, they haven't earned it all back, but it looks promising. I read an interview with Microsoft about that very topic but for the life of me I can't remember where. pinch.gif Every company goes into tons of debts when a new product is put out on the market. You could even take the iPod for an example. It took awhile for it to catch on and Apple suffered for it. All's well now though.

No, I'm not referring to "money invested", I'm referring to actual losses. The Xbox division continues to lose money; that is, it has not only failed to make back the money invested, but it has lost money every quarter of its existence.

As for the iPod, no, I don't think think Apple suffered for it, at least not for very long, because it was a fairly successful product from the get-go. If you have evidence to suggest otherwise, by all means, please post it.

I already have an iPod, so I won't be getting the Zune. I do like the Zune's ability to share songs with other Zune users within 30 feet though. That's pretty cool. :)

i heard about mircosoft is coming out with a device that will compete with ipod...but now it's here.

personally, i wouldn't buy it. It's too bulky. And the screen is just dying to get smudges.

That's still pretty awesome though. I'm sure there's a way around it too. There's always a way around things. eyebrowes.gif

Does anyone know if the Zune will run of Windows Media Player or will it have its own music program like iTunes?

it's got its own software, which i think would be annoying. but it fits perfectly with wmp (imagine that), so i don't think it'd be too much of a problem.

i think it looks funny. and i have an ipod already, so ehh.

Tomorrow in my marketing class a speaker who's in charge of the Zune program is coming to talk with us. it'll be interesting. I personally don't think it will do THAT well compared to ipod/apple.

I actually prefer it have its own program. That is, if it's good. I'm not a huge fan of WMP.

The speaker brought in some Zunes for us to look at... the screen quality is REALLY good, and the screen like going from music to videos is similar to the zen. they're also really scratch resistant.

the videos are... creepy. https://www.zune-arts.net/

I'm pretty sure I want the ZUNE. It seems like a better deal overall. I mean, you get a lot more that the iPods.

The only down side is that it's bigger than iPods. Hmmm.

I think I'll buy a ZUNE... Eventually. I think I'll wait 'til it's better and has more options, and is smaller. Good idea? I think so.
