A man was to be sentenced, and the judge told him, "You may make a statement. If it is true, I'll sentence you to four years in prison. If it is false, I'll sentence you to six years in prison." After the man made his statement, the judge decided to let him go free.

What did the man say?

You will sentence me to 6 years in prison. If it's true, then he goes to prison for 4 years. If it's false, he'll be sent to 6 years in prison, which would make the prior statement true.

Had to learn all about this kind of stuff in Math last year.

Logic.

Elementary / Early junior high math covers a lot of logic, puzzles, etc.

You know, he coulda said something like "Let me free now or my dog will eat your children."

You guys are stupid!

Answer: The answer to the riddle can not be "he said nothing" because in the riddle it says "After the man made his statement..." Therefore, that is the official answer.

...okay.

Yeah you have to learn about logic and logic puzzles in Math. I had a lot of questions about islands of liars and truth-tellers.

Maybe I'll just explain it again.

My stab at it was the statement "You will sentence me to 6 years in prison."

If the statement is true, then he will go to prison for 4 years, which contradicts his "true" statement of six years.

If it's false, he'll be sent to 6 years in prison, which makes what he said true, e.g., not false.

Either way it contradicts whatever he said.
