So from what I gather, you were just curious about the right-wing club and you want to join this one? _smile.gif

Nicki, that's pretty extreme. mellow.gif I got lucky, my entire family is liberal (whether they want to admit it or not).

He was kidding, at least. I just had to change the subject really quickly. He argues with my uncle all the time over his views.

Hm, interesting idea. The definitions bring up a few questions. For example, which side of the spectrum emphasizes fiscal responsibility? I'd say conservative. But does our current Republic administration emphasize fiscal responsibility? Given the budget deficit, the answer is clearly no. And that comes under constant criticism from the Democrats.

What about state's rights? Sounds like a conversative stance. But Bush trumped state's rights in 2000 when he got the US Supreme Court to overrule the Florida Supreme Court on the election issue.

The point is that, in my opinion, neither party is representative of conservative or liberal—each simply does what it takes to stay in power, whatever the current trend may be.

Agreed & disagreed at the same time.
In terms of domestic issues, I'm happy that the Democrats took Congress. But Iraq is a sticky shoe, imo. Some in the party (the Dems, that is) want to pull out now, some want a timetable, others want to 'stay the course' a la Bush. All the people know is that they (or, we) want a change, but the Dems don't seem to have a plan. _unsure.gif At the same time, the ineffectiveness of the Republican party is what took them out of power, and I sure as hell don't trust them to do anything good about Iraq. But the Dems aren't united, and the party is sure to become Nancy Pelosi's bitch. Don't get me wrong, I agree with her on a lot of things, just not Iraq. I highly disagree with pulling out now, (which is what she wants) being that Iraqi government is so new.

I voted (straight-party Democrat, unfortunately it was a matter of "why not?" this time).

One of the state questions in Oklahoma was to smash the law against selling alcohol on election days. I thought that was pretty funny, considering the fact that I didn't even know the law existed. But yeah, the question passed, so liquor stores don't have to close up shop for election days anymore!

That's so random!

I was very disappointed to see that about 7 states voted to ban gay marriage and/or civil unions. On the bright side, Arizona was the first state to reject the ban, Missouri approved stem cell research, and South Dakota didn't ban abortion. The newspaper described those three as a triple threat to conservatism, and I cringed rather a lot, especially after noticing all the approvals of gay marriage bans.

^ mmm. kind of really really inappropriate optimism. but hey, i'll take what i can get.

[interjection] I'm listening to scissors for lefty for the first time. I approve[/interjection]

And radhika, i agree with you to an extent, in that now the democrats have to actually do things, which may prove slightly iffy, as it is always easier to be in opposition. However, i'd rather see them f**king up than the republicans. plus, i get to act all smug, as i would have been really pissed off had i stayed up til 5 to watch results and the bloody republicans held congress. lol. nicki knows. i got in hissy fit when they didnt win f**kin mississippi.

"Next to Argyle" is their best. By far. it was on that mix I made that I never got around to sending you.

That was really amusing, actually. You ought to call me in the middle of the night when you're ridiculously hyped on caffiene and politics more often.

Remind me never to go to Kentucky. I've just stumbled across an absurd amount of delusionally conservative groups on facebook, all of which were started by people from Kentucky. Not to make such generalities, but really I'm completely horrified.

QUOTE
-the statistic for homosexual promiscuity runs from 20 to over 120 people per year. There are a ton of studies that have demonstrated this. Just google it.

I mean really, what the hell does that even mean? In what way should that convince me that gay marriages should be banned? But no, really, WHAT DOES IT MEAN?!

QUOTE
Here's an argument against homosexuality: in America, it spreads AIDS and other STDs at a rate far surpassing that of heterosexual sex, primarily because the AVERAGE gay male has 120 partners per year! There's a reason gay people can't give blood! Homosexuality is unnatural, it's repulsively perverted, and it epitomizes total and absolute debauchery. Nations marred in debauchery find themselves weak, lacking innovation, and mired in economic and cultural mediocrity--just look at the Dutch!

Has this guy ever met a homosexual before? And the reason gays can't give blood is about as valid as the reason why they can't marry in most states. What kind of "average" is 120 partners a year??! What kind of sample was used? Obviously not a very good one. Plus, those people would be completely irrelevant to those who'd want to get married in the first place. Plenty of straight people sleep around, and yet we aren't going to stop them from marrying too, because it's not relevant in the least and marriage still does not need to be protected! Besides which, what's wrong with the Dutch? If I have to choose between "cultural mediocrity" and the denying people their natural rights for no apparent reason, I'm going to go with the mediocrity.

QUOTE
Homosexuality--like adultery, alcoholism and tax evasion--is reprehensible and the people of the United States have the right to define marriage as they see fit.

Sorry, when did homosexuals cease to be people of the United States? Since when did irrelevant people have the right to determine how other people live their own private lives?

I can't even go on anymore. I'm completely disgusted. And James, have I mentioned how jealous I am of you having liberal politics teachers? My government class is absolutely killing me.
