The oedipus complex is the belief that everyone has a subconcious sexual attraction to their mother.

I personally believe that it's somewhat true... althought I don't want to fool around with my own mother I know that I'm personally attracted to women with similar qualities.

I think in my friends psyhcology book it says around 5 years old kids become attracted to their parent of the opposite sex.

I remember this from my english class also lol. Oedipus married his mother cause he was seperated from birth and his destiny was that he was going to have sex with his mom and then kill his dad. lol i dont remember it was all confuzing. lol ahah

please people you have to take into consideration that Freud proposed the Oepidus and Electra complex to be applied when you are in the ages to 3-6 not the age you are at NOW ...

To some extent i think its true say in the want of affection of the parent of the opposite sex...

Hm. That didn’t happen to me because I’m ASIAN who was made by fobby parents.
Most Asian kids are pressured to work, get physical abuse, verbal abuse, and a lot of Asian tradition. I don’t think it’s easy to love your parents at that age.

Whether you were attracted to parents or not, it depends how you are raised, I believed.

really? I read Freud's cilvilization and its discontents, && he mentions oedipal complex in there, though he said every man has sexual feelings for his mum, it sorta gross me out...in a certain way >.>

but our english discussion group came up with the conclusion that only young/toddler boys have it -.-;; but I did not know that he proposed only ages 3-6, my teacher said all men.

Okay, that's a little bit creepy and far-fetched. I'd say that I believe enough that a girl/boy would want qualities of the opposite sex that is similar to the parent of the opposite sex, but that's about it.

because i know for a fact that there is a number of boys out there who could love their mother to the fullest, even if they are beaten.

i'm not sure if the mother attraction is severe.

..no, lol. he married his mother and had kids etc, unknowingly. when the truths found out, things go wrong. hence the term 'tragedy'

the oedipus complex (sigmund freud named it this) is basically that young boys' love for their mothers turns territorial against their fathers when they begin to develop as men, n can lead to sexual feelings. apparently all boys subconsciously do this, but it goes away after a while etc, and only some cases boys actually fancy their mother. i reckon angelina jolie's kid will have it

The Electra Complex is directed towards females, therefore, it cannot apply towards males. And, the Oedipus/Electra complex pertains to little children only. Not to mention the fact that Freud was biased against women and due to the fact that he has little to no experimental proof, his theories are not true...or should I say that they cannot be believed.
