I think this book is awesome by Zora neale Hurston..I've seen the movie of this but is never as good as a book. about a girl named Janie whose life has been through an obstacle from her first marriage to her last. The language in this book is awesome, has a southern accent, and the storyline is exciting as well...though I really hate books I gotta say this one is good.

Anyone else read it?

Unfortunately I did. I'm sorry, but perhaps I'm just not cultured enough. THE DIALECT KILLED ME. GAH. I managed to get through it. I mean, I enjoyed the story, but I would've enjoyed it more if it wasn't so hard to read. Halle Berry played Janie in the movie of it - Oprah's production compancy produced it I think. I didn't see it.

Haha yeah at times, The Dialect can really get confusing as you try to replace them with english words.

Hated it.

I liked the dialect. It made her seem like more of a real person than a contrived character. Despite that, I didn't like Janie at all. It seemed like she was spending a lot of her time in her previous marriages attempting to break free of mens' hold on her. And then when some hot young guy comes around she retreats back into submission. Sure, he was nicer to her. But, it seemed like she was just put into a more comfortable prison than the ones she'd been in before. The angry feminist inside me gives this book a 2 thumbs down.

.........did you know she killed TeaCake? how can you say she has been put into a more comfortable prison? unlike her other 2 husbands. the first 1 Logan Killicks was basically nothing all he did was just order her around. it was a marriage she had to go into because her grandma was soon to die. and Logan out of many Black people in the area he was wealthy, owned land, about50+ acres and was farmer. But Janie didn't love him. as for her Second one Jody Starks. He was attracted to Janie because he was young and had a goal set in mind, but after they go married he became possesive and laid his hands on Janie. Janie Loved him but then he Died. So Tea Cake Janie's last love yeah he was young, and Janie was 40 years old now..sure why can't she fall back and love again? it's been awhile..and she found something in teaCake that the others didn't was the respect for her, yeah later on his colors came out..stripped Janie's money. and abused her in so many ways..he got bit by a rabid dog. and got rabies..he got sick and went crazy..almost killed Janie accusing her of cheating so Janie shot him to save her life and to save pain from TeaCake. I think you really have to understand the concept of the book and read through it to grasp the liking of the book.

I read it and I didn't really like it. Probably because it was for school and not my own choosing.

We read this book in English III and studied it as an Archaetype.

I like Zora Neale Hurston's short stories, but I really didn't like reading this. I mean, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't really interesting. I know it's supposed to be a feminist story and about a girl finding more of herself and trying to find love and life in marriages. But even when she thought she was in love with Tea Cake... she wasn't free. It wasn't until she shot him when she finally felt that she's found herself.

I guess it frustrated me a lot. And I'm so completely sick of feminist stories.




... If you like Zora Neale Hurston, I'd suggest reading her short story "Sweat"... It has a really snazzy ending.

I'm sorry, but I read this book and I couldn't even get through all of it before I just threw it down.

I read the last few pages and that was good enough for me after that.

I didn't like the whole idea of the book, or how it was written. Or just anything. The front of the book bothered me too. The cover of the book has to look decent for me to actually read the book

I was going to get in this book club but we had to read this book before hand, so I suppose I can't join the club. I think it was on the school list or something. But I didn't want to read the school reading list so I got stuck in a stupid english class.

What exactly do you mean by "good"?

I had to read it in class two years ago (right when the movie came out, coincidentally), and hated it. I don't think I ever finished it. No wonder my grade suffered. As great at my teacher was/is, even his outburts on tree sex couldn't make it bearable.

I agree with you completely. I don't think it's Feminist at all. The plot had too much to do with her various male dependecies to be Feminist.

I had to read everything out loud in the first chapter before I got the hang of it..

Definitely the only decent part of that book.
