Dragging images is causing serious CPU consumption and sometimes freezes my PC, what's the problem?

Hey what's up guys, well basically I have Windows XP with a Pentium 4 2.5GHz CPU and 992 MB of RAM

The problem I'm currently having is that when I drag images within Photoshop, the CPU usage shoots up, and there's been a few times that my PC just freezes. Right now Photoshop is installed onto my Primary drive, the C:

But I have a 200HD, and I only used up 6GBs as of now.

What exactly is causing my PC to freeze? Oh and by the way, I just re-installed my Windows XP so basically it's running as fast as possible since I don't have useless crap on my hard drives anymore.

The one and only thing I can think of... is the paging file. The total paging file size for all drives is 1488MB. Is there any tweaking of any sort that I can do? I'm seriously not lookin forward to doing any upgrades to my PC... I just recently replaced both my RAM sticks with two 512s.

What do you think I should do?

Well, uhhh...

I know there are two different kinds of memory. One is storage memory, and then the other is kind of like..processing memory. How fast the computer can do something.

You may want to do research on that but...that may be it.

( I am not a computer genius..and I dont really know much about that..but..try checking that out?)

In my Performance Options, under the Advanced tab; the in the Virtual Memory section it reads, "A paging file is an area on the hard disk that Windows uses as if it were RAM."

Total paging file size for all drives: 1488MB

This is the only assumption I have as far is it's making something (either RAM, CPU, or HDD) over work itself, maybe even over heating.

BTW the case is wide open with 3 additional fans installed, this is a custom machine.

I'm at the point of aligning all 3 fans pointin towards the CPU and RAM sticks and buying 15lbs bag of dry ice so it pushes the coldness into the case lol.

No but seriously, I don't know what to do.

Eh, thats weird. I had a similar problem with my old computer. I couldnt fix it... so I just gave up and bought a new one. huh.gif

I have a 3 ghz, and 2gb of ram, and my cpu usage right now is only around 5%, and thats with Photoshop, AOL, and iTunes running.

Your ghz and ram shouldnt be whats slowing you down. When you're at the Windows Task Manager, whats your cpu when you have no programs running? And whats the pf usage, threads, and processes number?

[edit] Its not normal for your computer to have a really high cpu, unless you have multiple programs running. Do you download stuff alot? And, do you have up to date virus and/or security programs on your computer? If so, you might want to do a virus scan. If you do have some type of trojan / virus, reinstalling windows wont get rid of it.

But wouldnt that keep other areas of your computer from not being cooled properly?

I could be wrong, but this might be related to your video card. Do you know what your video card specs are? Also, is the video card built into your motherboard? I had a similiar issue when I bought my computer and I had to put in an additional video card.

^ Thats true. But why would a computer freeze over a video card?

I found some information regarding that:
QUOTE
Solution 8: Update the video card driver.

Many video card manufacturers frequently update their software drivers. You may have an outdated video card driver even if you recently purchased the video card. Contact the video card manufacturer for an updated driver or download one from the manufacturer's website. (To determine the manufacturer of a video card, view the card's properties in Device Manager.) You can often determine if the video driver is outdated by changing the color depth and resolution of the video card or by disabling graphics hardware acceleration.

Solution 9: If your video card has less than 128 MB of RAM, consider updating it.

For optimum performance in Photoshop, use a video card with more than 128 MG of RAM.

From -
Slow performance and screen redraw problems in Photoshop (CS2 on Windows)
Issue: Photoshop runs extremely slowly, or it slows suddenly and appears to freeze.

I can tell you from personal experience that upgrading my VCard totally helped with sluggish issues I had in Photoshop (and in PC gaming, for that matter).

CPU usage with just the browser running to view this thread is at 2% - 5%
PF usage is only 152MB

I have a NVIDIA 5600 256MB "PCI" Card... I know, I know AGP is better....
I forget what I type into the RUN box so that it'll open up the specs of my Video card.

I wonder if I could tweak my video card some how... that might be the problem, I'm not sure.

How is his Computer Processor Shit? It's a 2.5 Pentium 4. Thats still pretty fast, it can run any of the new games that are on the market, including fear or Prey.

His video card is also good enough to run Photoshop. I have a crap builtin Intel one on this card and I can run Photoshop and Imageready just fine.

Explain this to me, what do you mean dragging images? Maybe If I understood what your were doing and what the problem was, I can help you.

Yeah, thats a pretty good processor. But since you computer is freezing, and the cpu is going crazy when running programs - it sounds like you need a new processor. Or, you might have a virus or something.

Lol I'm no expert, but thats just my opinion. Have you done any virus scans? And you have any spyware / virus protection on your computer?

yes his processor is crap cuz he doesnt have dual AMDs like i do...and every single goddamn vid card made since a long time ago has been good enough to run photoshop, integrated GPUs can run photoshop so i dont know what ur talking about
so i must be cool~

i think its either a virus or ur CPU's messed up

you're prabably correct.
tama's system is pretty up to date; but if you just reformated it, how can you get a virus?

maybe your cpu is broken, heatsink's not working, too hot in the case, ect...

If I have to files open... two pictures, and I drag the picture around. Like open up a picture, then click and hold on the picture and drag the picture around...

If it's a normal picture, it takes longer to freeze up. But if it's a picture with alot of modifications such as eyecandy mods... it'll freeze within 2 seconds of dragging the image.
