We CAN'T stop global warming--it's a natural process. It's just that we are speeding it up a LOT. So if we get together to do something, we can slow its effects so that humans will be around for years to come.

this is funny someone made a topic about this considering i made like two topics about this in the lounge but no one seemed to care for some reason. ah im over it. atleast people are responding to this one.

I recently just watched this 20|20 show and the segment was called "The last days" and it talked about the top ten ways the world will end. The nubmer one reason is global warming. But you know its not just big companies who are hurting the earth its like all of us. we all need to cut down as a group.

Its really simple all we need to do is balance the carbon dioxide that we put into the air. its not rocket science. we just need to work together.

I didnt watch all of the show but the other ways of the world ending is. Epidemic, Nuclear wars, An astroid that will come 2029 (then again seven years later.)

QUOTE(elainedcuzunome @ Aug 21 2006, 11:04 PM) *
Global Warming hasn't been this intense. Just look: The levels of CO2 compared to temperature:

In at least the past FOUR HUNDRED THOUSAND YEARS, the amount of CO2 has never surpassed the amount we have now. The amount of CO2/PPM has never exceeded 300, but in the last few years, it has grown to almost FOUR HUNDRED. And you know why? Because we use cars, electronics, and other energy consuming things. And DEFORESTATION. Cutting down the rain forest means that there are less trees to "eat" the CO2. And so Amount of CO2>Amount usually consumed by trees. And so more CO2 traps heat in the Earth, meaning Global Warming.

And what effects come sooner because of it? DEATH? Yeah. Did you see The Day After Tomorrow? The Atlantic Current changed drastically and pretty much caused everything to happen. Do you know how it'll change? The amount of salt in the ocean will change the density of water. And you know what changes the amount of salt in the water? MELTING GLACIERS. And melting glaciers are caused by Global Warming, which I have proven above is caused by humans.

And it will devistate the Earth. Do you know droughts? They're caused by low rainfall and high temperatures and a low amount of ground water. Which is basically caused by humans and global warming. Do you know what they do? No grass, plants, nothing. Which means that animals AND humans will have nothing to eat. And if you only eat meat, there'll be no food for the cows/chickens/pigs/ect. to eat, so you'll starve too. And less/no humans or none of certain species of animals will damage the Earth's ecosystem, which devistates the Earth. And you know why? Because of humanity and Global warming.

*sigh* I have to remember that this is not the debate forum. We should make one for global warming though :) Sorry if I offended you in any way. I just get really defensive when someone disagrees with or questions me.

I'm sorry. sad.gif

Umm I'm sorry but I disagree with you and the whole 'devastating the earth' thing. the Earth is a self healer. Its much bigger than anything we humans do to it. We may die, but the Earth isn't going anywhere. Its a constant ever changing cycle of highs and lows, when one thing goes out of balance, a change happens to correct the balance, hence the danger to us with Global Wrming. It gets too hot here, the earth will change to correct the balance, hence a dramatic climate shift that will plunge the earth into another ice age. Most of us wouldn't survive it, but millions of years down the road the earth will slowly thaw and start all over again like it never happened. We aren't hurting the earth, we're just causing an imbalance. The more we force the imbalance, the more of a change to correct it. THIS is why Global Warming is a risk. Not because of the warming itself but because of the drastic effects it will have on our lives and the lives of our children and so on. The planet it fine. It will go on. Its our asses we have to save. We have to save our asses from ourselves. We are making this a problem, and therefore it is a problem we have to fix before mother nature fixes it herself.

On another note, did anyone see the vma's tonight? Al Gore did a little speech and I was really glad to see him there. I'm really rooting for him with all of the Global Warming campaigning hes been doing. I would love to see more people speaking out and making people aware instead of throwing billions of dollars away killing people in another country. hammer.gif And he said something about us being the generation to solve this problem, an dI hope hes right. Its people like us, the teens and young adults who are going to be bringing kids into the world and hopefully teaching them good habits. And because we are young we can change our ways easier than people who have been doing the same thing for 50 years. Its so frustrating because with this issue theres only so much every person can do. And I just look forward to seeing more people do their little part. Because if everyone had a penny it wouldnt add up to much, but you get 5 million people together who all just have one penny...well you get the idea.

I’m not the only one who wants to move to another planet. I’m just fascinated and idealistic.

Yeah, you are really facinated with the idea of moving to another planet.
You're not the only one. If worse comes to worse, we'll have to migrate to another planet.

QUOTE(Spiritual Winged Aura @ Aug 31 2006, 7:21 PM) *
Are you sure? when did someone say that? And who say that? Do you think it's possible that it will repair itself by 2040?

whoever that predicted that isnt always right.

i hope it's enough to reduce by ALOT.

Do you think it's possible? I'm sure, a lot of people know about global warming ... but did they do anything powerful enough? I don't think so. I still see a lot of cars, used gas, burning, and a lot.

Global warming is highly at risk.

It was reduced by a lot! Y'know the collection thing for ACs and refridgerators? That's to reduce the amount of CFCs.
And I read it on an article on BBC News online. I think it was about a week ago? I'm not sure.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/5276994.stm

And we can slow down global warming if we can find alternatives to fuel and gas. They even have a prototype car that uses water.

Many people know about global warming now. Before, they had a whole team of scientists that they paid to say that global warming never existed. And politicians? I don't think many of them would actually stand out in public to stand out against global warming. Well, except for Al Gore.

Cool! I hope we won't have war, weapon of mass destruction, new fireworks, or any form of technology that contribute the global warming, and all that!

I heard, "someone" is thinking of using corn oil to replace gas.(i think oil is better, idk)

Well, it would be a good idea if the technology was more advanced..
And we don't really know what it's like to live on Mars yet. When I grow up, I'll probably research it more and develop more detailed plans for colonization on Mars. biggrin.gif

ohmy.gif He's one of the most important people in the fight for the environment! He's pretty much one of the only politicians with the balls to stand up and fight for the environment..
He even made this documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, about global warming (I think it was a book first). It was one of the best documentaries that I've ever seen.
And he's been touring all over the world trying to get countries to be more environmentally friendly.

i don't believe in global warming. j/k
one time at the friends house, i was looking at the seventeen magazine that had a picture of two polar bears with a speech bubble that said, "HELP, if these ice caps keep melting we'll drown!" and we both started laughing for a long time. we werent high or anything, i guess it's mean to giggle at drowning polar bears.

I saw that Global Warming documentary thing with Al Gore a few weeks ago with my boyfriend and his family... and they're hardcore Liberals/environmental/peace/hippy kinds of people. They went out and traded their Ford Explorer in for a truck that runs on Deisel fuel. But anyway, I was pretty shocked at how the Earth has changed from 50 years ago til now. I wanted to cry when they showed pictures and compared the Earth then and now ermm.gif

Yeah we were talking about it in science and sadly a few people were clueless to the actual effects of Global Warming. The cars that run on water are supposedly coming out in 2010 and the only exhaust that comes out of it is water vapor.

^ Yeah. They have the prototypes already.

They're gonna cost a lot though because the thing that splits hydrogen from oxygen (I think it's called hydrogen fuel cells, but I don't remember) is really expensive.

Isnt there cars that run on that yellow stuff i dunno ethanol i guess. but hopefully they make all the cars that have the same fuel so we dont have to be going into different fuel stations to get different kinds of fuel in the future.

Sorry for bumping this, but it's madness!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6114250.stm
Greenhouse gas levels are still growing. We're definitely gonna have to change the Kyoto Protocol.
And the US hasn't even ratified it yet.

The ozone hole grew too..
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6077018.stm

And they say that there will be hardly any fish by 2050.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6108414.stm

I've been seeing so many articles on global warming in the past 2 months and it's driving me crazy! We really need the democrats to take control of the House. ermm.gif

its seems not enough people are taking this seriously at all. I never here about it on the news and people dont talk about at school. I think alot of people are unaware of this problem..and if they are they just dont realize how serious it is.

Researcher dreams up $2.5 trillion "space sunshade"

QUOTE
With all these batteries exploding vehicles running around, we aren't too surprised that researchers at the University of Arizona are getting fired up about stopping global warming, but dropping $2.5 trillion on such a project might just cool the whole idea down a bit. Nevertheless, astronomer Roger Angel thinks that launching a "constellation made of trillions of small, free-flying spacecraft parts a million miles above Earth" could form a long, cylindrical cloud to reflect "about 10 percent" of the sun's rays away from our planet. The lightweight flyers hanging around in the L-1 orbit would be crafted from "transparent film pierced with small holes," utilizing "MEMS" technology mirrors as tiny sails that hold them in line while drifting about. The idea gets even zanier when referring to shooting the "20 million ton structure" into space; it's been suggested that "20 electromagnetic launchers" running on hydroelectricity could launch a stack of flyers "every five minutes for ten years" to complete the project, and while he feels that even the massive sunshade is no substitute for "developing renewable energy," that's still a huge chunk of coin to drop on something so, um, outlandish.

Here is an article i found on engadget.com about putting solar shades that protect the earth by blocking 10% of sun rays which i think is really low, if they do spend that amount of money. This article was interesting so i thought i should put it up.
