I abhor gender stereotyping.

Nearly everybody I know, both young and old, all gender stereotype. I think it's completely wrong.

For example, on another forum the other day, somebody said:
QUOTE
girls are freakin crazy. i had an ex stalk my new girl at her job and cause a scene. wtf why are girls so crazy & complicated?

So, because of one individual girl, you're going to make the assumption that all girls are crazy? Hell no! That's like saying men are all rapists because my sister was raped. If the girl was crazy, she was a crazy individual.

Everybody can be a little something (insert adjective here) at times, but that has nothing to do with our gender, race, nationality, age, and so on. It has to do with our personalities, nothing else. You are who you are, nothing less, nothing more. It's just wrong to make an assumption about a gender because of one person's actions or personality.

Yeah. There's this one stereotype that all guys just want you for one reason. I'm no guy, but I think that's ridiculous.

yeah okay, it is,

but still even some girls agree we can have a little pms and do stuff

and guys admit things to other things.

besides it not a complicated subject, people do it, but its something we deal with everyday and i dont belive its such a huge problem, all we can do is try to prove them wrong, and if they change their mind, its fine, if they dont then they can screw themselves.

see not complicated
simple.

I swear guys have PMS as well.. except.. minus the menstruation part. laugh.gif I agree, though; well, there's another stereotype - guys think every girl gets PMS, and that must be the reason they're "freaking out." mellow.gif That upsets me. Okay.. getting back on topic.. yes, gender stereotyping is egregious, but just as there are a plethora of other stereotypes, there's nothing we can do about it. ermm.gif

Yes - exactly! *Sigh* There are crazy females as well as there are crazy males as well. Incompetent females.. incompetent males. shrug.gif

Actually guys go through menopause.

Also the same is with girls. For example the "Why does every boi only want one thing" topic. You are putting all guys in one category based on a bad experience you had. I have nothing against you guys I am just pointing out that this happens in both sexes.

I have a really good friend who does that. Because of her past relationships, she thinks all men are pigs, and she's certainly not afraid to show it. I've seen this happen with so many friends, in both genders, it's so disappointing. It makes me a little sad when people can't properly see things...

Actually my sister and I were just talking about this one...

Why are guys called pimps when they have more than one girl and girls are called sluts when they have more than one guy?

Hm. The world may never know.

Yeah, that disgusts me. stubborn.gif Either way, anyways. Gahh. I wonder what life would be like if we were all asexual (like Nate tongue.gif). mellow.gif Or at least.. if there was only one gender. laugh.gif HOW WEIRD WOULD THAT BE?

That's something many people have always remarked on, yet things never change.

What the problem is, along with many other types of ignorance in this world, is that these things are engrained into our heads. As you grow up, your family and peers tell you to be this, to do that, and so you grow up feeling compelled to fit a certain stereotype-- a stereotype that we have created, a stereotype that will always exist because we allow it to exist! Old habits die hard, so if you've grown up all you're life thinking you have to be manly because society has told you men must be this way, or pretty and thin because society has told you women must be this way, it's really hard to change the way you think. Even realizing this much is difficult for people, which is why the ignorance will always continue to exist.

I seriously think you're overanalyzing a passing statement and it's really nothing to take offense over.

It's true that everyone's an individual, people shouldn't make assumptions, etc. but that's just a part of everyday life. But, it's also true that gender, race, age, what have you are all factors that add into who you are.

I'm a girl, and I'm not gonna lie,... most girls tend to be a little more analytical, uptight, high strung, and generally crazy. It might not be the case for you and I really don't think that's the case for me, but it's just something that 'girls' are 'categorized' into.

Also, I know a lot of guys who are really neat and a lot of guys who are really messy. But, when somebody says "Men are pigs"... I don't get into a hissy fit and tell them that they shouldn't gender stereotype.

It's just a generalization. The world can't thrive without people making generalizations about other people, like "Asian parents are really pushy", "Black people can jump real high", whatever.

Hm... and about race generalization... there wouldn't be special scholarships for hispanics if people didn't go around cracking jokes about Mexicans mowing their lawn...

So, I guess, next time when you run across a stereotype that doesn't fit you, be like "Uh-huh, too bad i'm not like that." No big deal.

Hmmm. I agree that the given example may indeed be a simple passing statement. Given elabortation, that individual may have very likely denounced such a sweeping generalization. However, I don't agree that generalization's are a favorable tool in the sense of gender relations. In fact, I would go so far as to say that it is actually a rather menacing and malicious entity in our society. Gender stereotyping is just a small effect of a larger problem in gender roles and societal gender standards.

As a soceity, as working within many gender relations, I don't find it convincing to say that gender stereotyping helps us to move forward in a progressive and honest manner. I think human beings need to stop reducing each other into stereotypes, gender roles, and most importantly, I think people need to stop expecting each other to fit into these society constructs and standards. These expectations and generalizations become very troublesome for healthy adult development. These shape and form and mind f**k children. It just isn't cool.

I think we need to defeat those prejudices enforced by our societies in favor of individual evaluations of character. Sure, there are differences among males and females. Sure, we can recognize them. But, we have to realize, must of our preconceptions, gender roles, and standards don't actually fit reality. At least, we need to reconsider our prejudices, if not entirely strip them of power.

Well of course it's wrong, but it's just part of human nature. We can't stop it completely but I sappose we can all do our parts.

Any kind of stereotyping just annoys me. Gender, even racial stereotyping like you mentioned - people think all Asian people are smart and play the piano, which really bugs me (even though i'm pretty smart & play the piano...=P). i'm such a hypocrite, but i can't help it. but when people think ALL Asians do that, it's just annoying, yenno?

THEY DO! It was in our newspaper. Its called IMS (Irritable Male Syndrome)

Well, I dont mean to be pathetic or anything, but yeah, there are sterotypes and we can't really do much about it. If they dont have the compentancy to realize that yes everyone is an individual and all that jazz, then by god, when they screw up..I hope they screw up BIG.

YES EXACTLY.

Plus, there wouldn't even be that generalization if it wasn't true.
