I'll probably get flamed for this eventually, but I've been really happy with the Apple laptops I've owned, and the new Macbooks are really nice. Plus you can run OS X and Windows on them, so they're quite versatile.

^^ yeah apple/mac books... my school actually lets us 'rent' a laptop for a year [or longer] for only 50 bucks? or a little more [under 100]... it gets us prepared for college in some ways.

Compaq laptops are crap. The keyboard gets messed up pretty easily.

Yeah, MacBooks are pretty cool. I have one and I think it's pretty good for school.. Just don't get an iBook or PowerBook. They have bad batteries (exploding ones) from Sony.

What I really want is an Alienware laptop, but those are expensive..

iBooks and PowerBooks are not sold anymore, and only a small number are affected by the problem, so it's nothing to worry about.

I'd say somewhere around $800-$1200 is a good price.
If you're low on cash, I'd suggest Toshiba. I like their laptops :)

I was thinking of getting a macbook pro, but I realized I couldn't afford one. Instead I settled for an Acer Aspire 5670, which was a whole lotta bang for my buck. It destroys my desktop in benchmarks and it was $1,070. I think the new Aspire came out though, so I'm not sure if the 5670 is still being sold.

If anyone gets a 5670, be sure to format to NTFS and combine the partitions.
