i mean, i learned to ride a bike by myself...

i just never bothered to learn how to swim and i kind of regret it. i have access to a pool (even in the winter because it's indoor) but how would i teach myself? where would i start?

i tried teaching myself. i tried the front crawl but i didn't really get anywhere. meaning, i stayed in one place.

any tips? i don't really want to spend more money on private lessons because it's not my first priority if i had to spend a couple hundred bucks.

interesting question. i think you could. maybe you could try googling basic swim techniques and the four (or five, including sidestroke) strokes - fly, back, breast, & free. look for diagrams or something. or get an instructional dvd. i'm sure it's been done before.

i myself have been taking swim lessons; i think learning from a professional is good, but it's all up to you. try your local community center, or the ymca. there's lots of options out there. or just, as you said, use the pool you have access to, and try finding instructional diagrams/dvds.

good luck!

yay im a swim instructor!
i dunno how that helps.

but anyway, i think asking someone who knows swimming really well to help you would be safer. learning to swim can be a dangerous thing alone

Don't use "arm floaties" (swimmies). They are actually really dangerous.

Just get a swim instructor, or a friend who knows what they are doing. It's near impossible to teach yourself how to swim.

Yeah. You know how I learned to swim?

When I went to leadership camp two/three years ago, we were required to take a swim test. Well I thought, "what the hell", and jumped in the lake area which was "designed" for the test, only to find it was so deep that I couldn't touch the bottom. I got freaked out, but I didn't have any time to even say anything because the 5 other people jumped too, and we had to start right away.. I think it was like 60 meters or something and I finished it. No problemo. It's not as hard as you think. Well, I thought I would drown but it wasn't that bad afterall.

I wouldn't find that reassuring.. 0.0

Yes, there is a program in which babies are left in water so they can develop swimming abilities by themselves. From what I hear, it use to be popular in the philipines.
