Because it's bad luck to say good luck, so you tell them to break their leg because that would be bad so somehow, they do good ... Yeah.

I never understood the "You're the apple of my eye either", but I think it's explained in the movie/book or wherever it came from.

What's old english from ? blink.gif

and in tennis when there's a backhand but there's no fronthand?! i mean, why is it called forehand. that's like forefinger so how come there's no backfinger?!?!

Yeah I always wondered why they said the alarm's going off, or the sprinklers are going off or anything. It's always annoyed me and I used to argue about it when I was little.

Well, if you're turning the alarm on or setting the sprinklers on...then the other choice for when they ring or spray water is off, right? I don't know, actually. But it kinda makes sense.

Mmm its a religious reference. Eve went for the fruit she couldn't have, which was an apple. So the phrase refers to something you can't have but desire.

Nobody ever said it was an apple. It was just described as fruit.

Bells are supposed to be festive. So if you're expressing your excitement to go to a festive event, you'd say, "I'll be there with bells on!"

I don't get the "all's fair in love and war" much either.

But when they ring or spray water it's being used and so it's on and then when they stop it's off. Right ? Idunno.

Hamlet is questioning whether he should be alive or not; ie he is contemplating suicide. It's pretty apparent if you read the play.

"alls fair in love and war"-everything is fair in love and war which means that to win in love and in war you have to do anything and by any means.. its sort of a machiavelli-ish idea

"Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your gonna get"-- nowadays they have a map of the box telling you what kind of chocolate is in which area/part of the box ..
