QUOTE(n00b @ Aug 12 2006, 1:11 AM) *
i didn't ever understand
"break a leg"
that isn't really a "phrase"
it's an idiom, but i never understood it

^ Oh, I know the answer to this one. Actor's believed that wishing others good luck before they performed was bad luck. So instead, they said negatives.

People say "A diamond is forever" because diamonds don't get scratched, mold, or anything like that. It can't break down. Everything in the world could...animals die, food molds, something harder than a certain material could be broken down it...but not diamonds.

Some quotes that are explained are very interesting...I like learning these kind of things.

You know the "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth?"
Telling you not to seek revenge or everyone would end up getting hurt over it.

^Also, if everyone were to seek revenge like that, everyone's eyes would be out ebcause we've all done something bad to someone else one time or another.

Well, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth', you know what that means, right? Well, if everybody was trying to get revenge that way, then nobody would have 'teeth' anymore because they were all taken away as revenge. I think that's just a way of making the quote sound negative.

You may understand better if you read the complete sentence version: "When in Rome, do as the Romans do."

Simply, try to blend in with the people around you by doing as they do (or saying what they say). The saying can normally be understood with just "when in Rome".

There is one im not 100% sure about..

"I think therefore I exist"
Im pretty sure that it means that since we are conscious we are sure we are real. I guess its a postule for life, or something like that.

That's not entirely true. That quote comes from Mesopotamia (I think Old Babylon, but I could be wrong). It's the "eye for an eye" law. For instance - if someone beat you up, they would cut off his hand, or something like that.

QUOTE(Yemmerz @ Aug 12 2006, 1:44 AM) *
Mmm its a religious reference. Eve went for the fruit she couldn't have, which was an apple. So the phrase refers to something you can't have but desire.

And I don't understand the "When in Rome" thing at all.

It's actually a mistranslation. Descartes' phrase was originally written in French, and translated into Latin as "Cogito ergo sum." What he really intended to say, though, was simply, "I am, I exist."
