i was reading a magazine and they had a poll called "do you think life would be better if you were pretty?" they polled a bunch of diffrent girls from diffrent countries and in Indonesia, about 90% of the girls said "yes". at first i thought "wow, thats kind of shallow". but then i thought about it.

people are always saying that its what inside that counts. i agree with that to some degree, but you gotta admit. life would be better and easier if you were better looking, for the most part. we're always first judged by our looks. at least thats what i think.

i don't think life is judged on personality alone. i mean, who do you approach to first in a crowded room? someone who's ugly or someone who's decent-looking? yes, if you are more beautiful you have more self-esteem compared to those who are ugly then they have low esteem which might make them irritable or mean. i mean, i have approached less good-looking people in my life and some of them turn out to be bitches.

How sad, really sad. In a way, it's true though. from where i come from, a lot of people are beyond the shallow level. they dont want to be friendly with ugly people, just pretty people.

Well I would agree with that article because today it's like glamour..beauty..looks..is what the world really revolves around. Most of the time.

As hard as it is to accept that we live in a shallow world, I would say that you're in denial if you think otherwise. Why else do you think we have problems like anorexia, bulimia, and other "diseases" of the sort more popular than ever these days?

Yeah I believe it's true as well, people these days don't have the right self esteem, so they feel bad about them selves, and those who are pretty act as if nothing can go wrong. People shouldn't feel as if their not pretty enough for the world, it's non-sense and it's in their heads. But realistically it sad but true.

If everyone were pretty, we would have one shallow bunch of human beings. The people that arn't pretty they have to work hard to prove that they arn't worthless just because there not pretty making them stronger as a person. Being pretty just makes you lazy or spoiled in that matter. But some people that are pretty are different so I can't say all people are like that.

I agree that the world today is a lot more shallow. But we are all guilty of that. Just think for a minute, what first draws you to a person? Yeah, that's right, their looks. It's once you get to know them that you apreciate, or don't apreciate, the person they are.
Another thing I'd like to point out: everyone's going on about not judging ugly people but what about the pretty people? I noticed that a few of you were going on about how pretty people are mean, that is just as bad as saying ugly people are mean. Why hate someone because they're pretty? Why should they be mean?
One more thing before I end this rant, and the reason why I quoted someone else: these "diseases" as you called them, are just that. They're mental health problems which often have nothing to do with losing weight but just use weight as the excuse. It's all about self-worth issues/proving yourself etc and often has nothing to do with being pretty. As most of you are trying to say: there are plenty of other things that people worry about besides being pretty: that's just one of the problems so why are we all assuming that it's to do with being pretty?
If you ask me, we're all as wrapped up in looks as the next person. And that includes me.
I'll get lost now.

I agree to a certain extent, though.

If someone who hated how they looked and tried to hide and disappear did become prettier, they probably would be happier. Their self-esteem would go up and the way they act and live life would change, too. Their attitude would be totally different, and that might help them live a happier life.

OF COURSE life would be better if you were prettier. That's just the way it is. If you were prettier, more people would actually want to get to know your personality.

ok so if we are beautiful then life i better but then you have to ask yourself what is the "beautiful look" beauty is different, in other countries having a little extra pounds is beautiful, in America looking like a skeleton is considered being beautiful, in Some countries in africa having a long neck is being beautiful.. so would you say that since we are living in america, if you are not thin you would have to thin down so you can have a happy life.. i think all people especially girls should just stop trying to be beautiful because in these changing times, beauty is always evolving as long as you think your pretty than your life will be better... its not about being beautiful its believing in yourself and your abilities

The inside counts, but as do appearances. People are attracted to visually appealing things and other individuals, sometimes more than anything else.

Shallow, maybe. Truthful, oh yes.

I believe that life can be easier when you are pretty.
People are more inclined to go out of there way for a pretty model girl type, then a frumpy girl. You know? It's a sad thing, but unfortunately very true.

I mean even girls do it too.
We sometimes find ourselves salavating over the hott guy in our school, who could not have an ounce of integrity in him.
And pass over the uglier boy who has a huge heart.

I don't exactly think that I would be happier if I was more physically attractive, but yes, of course I would not mind being prettier. Being pretty has its advantages, whether people want to admit them or not - from increased chances of being hired for a job, to catching the eye of others in a good way, to getting out of being ticketed by a police officer (er, just an example), etc.

I do think that personality is way more important than looks, but that is not exactly what it is about; I do not see it as a looks vs. personality thing. I think that I have a decent personality, but honestly, I would like to be prettier. I would not go so far as to say that our society revolves around the more attractive people, but one cannot deny that the prettier people are captivating.

Beauty is infinitely subjective, though, and I do not think that it could singlehandedly make or break one's happiness.

To be bluntly truthful, life is generally more pleasant for "pretty" people. Who would you rather help open a door, pick up papers, help cheat, talk to? an ugly person or a beautiful one? Want an interesting (but long) article? http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3917414

People may say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but guess what? There is a standard among our culture that defines what is considered beautiful, whether we know it/admit it or not.

Naturally, the ugly people tend to have lower self-esteems--> a somewhat negative outlook on life-->not as friendly/outgoing/cheerful as they could be or as pretty people are-->people avoid them-->cycle

That's life for you all. _dry.gif
