How do you define "left"? Left/right on the political compass only includes economic issues... perhaps we should divide the CB political community into quadrants.

Mindy, we're "left" as in we're social and/or economic liberals. That's our stance.

The definition of 'liberalism' is skewed in its own right, anyway..

Classic liberalism, economic liberalism, neo-liberalism; who gives a shit? I take liberal to mean the belief that labor is regarded above corporatism, regulation is strategic, not undemocratic, and government say-so in our personal lives is (pretty much) never justified.

Are there really any other bases to cover in today's world?

PS -- am I a member, or?

Well, right now there isn't even a conservative club, so while "left" may be extremely vague, we don't all have to agree on every issue.

I'll add the new members now. And still, anyone interested in making a sig?

You know what would be cool? If we had a webpage somewhere that had a little mini profile for each member, a quick reference for everyone's stance on certain big issues. Eh. I've been thinking too much, but yeah. _smile.gif

Yes if fact I do. It's sad to see so many young people call them self liberal, left-winged, a democrat, etc. It's sad because liberals just run around whining about problems but really don't do anything to fix them. They just blame others for the problems...That's a good message for today's young people. Also the democratic party supports abortion aka the killing of a developing human being. They also want to use taxpayers ' hard earned money to develop ridiculous gun control policies when they should be focusing on the real cause of crime...the criminal.

Hm. Well, let's see the definition of a liberal--
Liberal:
1. Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry.
2. Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded.

Using both those definitions, we could call Martin Luther King, Jr. a liberal. We could call the Founding Fathers of the USA liberals. We could also call Mahatma Gandhi a liberal. We could even call Jesus Christ a liberal.

Sounds a lot like MLK Jr, no? Is that why we have the Civil Rights Act and other laws to protect minorities against racism in the USA? Is that why Christianity is one of the biggest religions in the world today? Is that why India is independent?
--------
And yes, James, that is member bashing.

I agree with that statement but the thing is liberal ideals have changed from then and now. Liberals in the past made a lot more sense and were smart in the past...but today's Democratic party can't even be compared to the Democratic party from the past.

Of course. Today's Democratic party is an absolute joke, I'll give you that. Which is why not everyone in this club is a Democrat. _smile.gif Liberal ideals will always change & adapt with the times, though. Change is the essence of liberalism.

Liberal =/= Democrat.

Hell, I ain't even a yankee, so you cant tar me with that brush.

And furthermore, even if you wished to do so, i would observe that a Republican party who are seemingly sucking the dicks of the extreme religious right with no rhyme or reason, lead by a president who has completely drifted off into lala land because he knows he will be forever unpopular and doesnt have to worry about being releceted is hardly in much better shape.

= )
