because when i use the polygonal lasso tool and go around it the edges always look jagged

I used that tool a lot.
Just hit the shift button while going around.

ohh and remember to feather !

Actually, for collages.... Feathering?

The polygonal lasso tool usually works fine as long as you use straight lines, it usually ends up fine. There's supposed to be a lot of overlap so... -shrug- You don't really notice.

But you could use the pend tool. Just a suggestion.

I use the pen tool. I get better looks with that.

And why feather? I thought feathering was for the blending sides of things?

Uh, if you feather with a polygonal lasso tool on a collage, then technically, it wouldn't be a collage. It'd be a blend. =\

I just use the polygonal lasso. If you're getting jaggedy edges, check if your "Anti-alias" is checked (it's next to the feathering px on the toolbar on top).

I use the paths function.

What program do you have, again? I have photoshop, and, then once the path is closed right click >> make selection

You need to select the 2nd pen option, instead of the first.

The ones on the left.
