From Newsvine:
QUOTE
A 14-year-old girl who says she was sexually assaulted by another user of MySpace.com sued the social networking Web site Monday, claiming it does not take sufficient steps to protect underage members.

The girl says a 19-year-old man lied in his profile about being a senior on a football team to gain her trust and phone number.

Pete Solis was arrested in May on a charge of sexual assault of a child. He could not immediately be reached Monday evening.

The suit alleges that MySpace has "absolutely no meaningful protections or security measures to protect underage users."

"(MySpace) has got to take this seriously," said attorney Carl Barry, who is representing the girl and her mother. The suit seeks $30 million.

In a statement, MySpace said it is committed to the safety of its members.

"We take aggressive measures to protect our members," said Hemanshu Nigam, chief security officer. "Ultimately, Internet safety is a shared responsibility. We encourage everyone on the Internet to engage in smart Web practices and have open family dialogue about how to apply offline lessons in the online world."

Tom is upset. I'd be upset if that girl wins. I hate it that they let 14 and 15 year olds be on myspace. I liked it better when it was 16 and up.

What a stupid girl. It's her own fault for letting someone who she thought was a 19 yr old get her number. First off, she's 14. If she set her age right, only her friends could see her profile, so if she added or accepted his request she brought it upon herself to give him her trust. How exactly did he 'assault' her anyway. Did they meet up ? What a dumbshit then. Meetin up with someone 5 yrs older than you who is presumably very strong ( for being on the football team ) and then going alone ( which i am assuming though )

Yeah, she is stupid. Myspace takes enough measures to try and protect stupid 14 year olds. Her stupidity got her harassed.

Can I sue her for being a dumbass? Would that work? At this point, I think I'd have about as good of a chacne to win that case as she should hers.

She perfectly knows she's underage and she still risked to use MySpace to end up being sexually assaulted.

Stupid.

what a stupid girl she is.it's her own fault for letting someone who didnt know her to get the number.and she was willing to give that guy,no one forced her,so myspace shouldnt be told to bear the responsibility, shouldnt be blamed.

She might actually win. There were those people who sued McDonald's for making them fat, and the coffee lady.

The coffee lady won because McDonald's didn't have warning on their cups.

I think the person who sued McDonald's for getting them fat actually lost.

There's no way this girl can win. Myspace's TOS should protect them against it.

i heard something along those lines, then they had this other thing how they should just protect users more. Although most people just put in the wrong age so they can't exactly do it. Its pointless, if you allow your children on the internet and your paranoid then look over all the stuff your kids go at.
