I don't understand. I have friends that say they are depressed. They have no reason to. Maybe if they were starving to death and lived in Africa, maybe they might have a reason, but they live a normal American suburban life. It's ridiculous. Does anyone agree with me, or no?

Depression is not exclusively induced by emotions or stress and whatnot; it also has to do with biology (genetics, illnesses, etc.). Also, as many people do, your friends may have an inaccurate perception of what depression really is. With this in mind, I can't really say whether or not I agree. ^^v

It's ironic how fortunate North American teens who are handed everything they need to flourish in life become depressed over small(er) issues, compared to your example of starving kids in Africa. But it makes sense.
We're so used to having our way for everything, and we've never been through any real hardship. The smallest things can make us depressed. A complicated lifestyle gives you complicated problems. And although those kids in Africa have much more pressing issues, they haven't been babied into it and are still make the best of life in spite of it. Am I making too many generalisations? Sorry. |

I agree. A lot of my friends either just got over depression, or are still 'depressed.' I am, too, but not serious depression, I'm just real sad. But I don't mope around about it, and tell other people. I just write down my feelings.

QUOTE Maybe if they were starving to death and lived in Africa, maybe they might have a reason, but they live a normal American suburban life. It's ridiculous. You dont' know how angered I am by this statement. It's not ridiculous. Kids starving to death in Africa aren't depressed because things can get better and it feels good when there's room to improve. When everything's done for you and you can have anything you want, you don't feel the happiness of "improvement". By nature, you will take things for granted. If a starving child in Africa could go to McDonalds and get a free meal or stay in a hotel, they would be ecstatic. But when people like you and me go there, it's normal. So we don't feel that kind of excitement. Depression is also a medical illness that can be inherited, and people can't help it. Do you think people want to be depressed? Don't say it's ridiculous if they're depressed. That's like saying someone's ridiculous if they have ADD or down syndrome. You don't want to have it, but you do and it's inevitable. |

I never said the kids in Africa were depressed. I was using them as an example. I'm saying that we have nothing to cry about because we live so much better than they do. I think a lot of the problem is selfishness. When you think about yourself all the time, you're going to get depressed. I also feel that it is a lack of discipline. They don't know how to handle themselves. I'm so sick of the sh*t in today's society. Oh, I'm depressed because it was genetically handed down to me. Oh, boy. What will I ever do in life? BOO f**kin' HOO! I feel like sh*t everytime I feel bad because I know some person has it a thousand times worse than me. You know a good solution to not feeling depressed? Go help somebody. It will make them feel great and also yourself. Physcology is a f**ked up field today. It's just understanding the mind, and now they got it where we have to blame all our problems on some one or something else. Don't tell me that's not f**ked up. Cause it is. Why doesn't any one take responsibility anymore? Why is everyone so damn sensitive when it comes to other people? It's bull sh*t. |

It's got nothing to do with home. I talk to her. She loves her parents. We basically are the same person with different lives. Almost everything we like, or do is the same besides smoking and sex. Alright? |

I agree. But, everyone has their days when they feel like crap. The only thing that really gets me annoyed is when they say they're depressed and expect loads of attention.

being depressed has nothing to do with your surroundings. its a chemical imbalance, no matter how much money you make or where you live. everybody has a story...a billionaire could be just as depressed as someone who has no money. it hurts worse when you are depressed and you have everything. do not state your opinions as facts, you have no idea where that other person is coming from

I have friends that are bipolar. they're depressed one moment, and fine the next. they're kinda hard to understand if you haven't known them for a while, but once you do they're great people to hang out with. :)

Which probably explains why if I were uber-rich, I'd be depressed. No?
Anyway, only two of my friends are -- well, one of them just got diagnosed with manic depression. As for me, I only have anxiety issues... and probably something else... -shrug- |

No. Anyone can be depressed. Even if they're the richest, best looking person in America. Maybe he/she's not depressed over materialistic things but it has to do with their emotions. Maybe they feel like something is missing in their lives or whatnot. |

Yeah, I know everyone can be depressed. Alright? Do you think I was never depressed? Yes, I was and I got over it because I realized I was being selfish. And I'm not stating my opinion as fact, it's called common sense. When you see it everyday and how they talk, you can make some pretty good conclusions.

sometimes its not as easy to just wake up one morning and realize that. you could have been going through a phase, everybody has one. but depression isnt a phase not is it a choice. why do you think that people have a higher risk of commiting suicide once they go off the pills?

Agreed, Stately Lover.
Depression is NOT just something you can just 'get over'--it's a psychological disorder. If you get over it after 2 days, it is not depression. It was just a stage of being sad. Depression is not easy to overcome, and to do so takes the help of trained psychologists and (sometimes) psychiatrists. Depression may or may not require medication, but it does require professional help. Depression is a disorder. Sadness is an emotion. Get it straight, people! |

Also, remember that one's problems are one's own, and thus matter a lot to them, no matter how big or small. Other people may have bigger problems, but if those problems aren't affecting a person, he won't get that teary-eyed over them; however, problems that do affect him will naturally get him upset. And there's nothing wrong with that—it's our nature as humans.
