Agreed, Stately Lover.

Depression is NOT just something you can just 'get over'--it's a psychological disorder. If you get over it after 2 days, it is not depression. It was just a stage of being sad. Depression is not easy to overcome, and to do so takes the help of trained psychologists and (sometimes) psychiatrists. Depression may or may not require medication, but it does require professional help.

Depression is a disorder. Sadness is an emotion. Get it straight, people!

i know the person he's talking about, and she is clinically depressed... when you talk to her about it she basically tells you that its her own fualt for being depressed. she makes all the wrong descisions in her life. if she did the right thing for once she wouldn't feel depressed...

depression is not easy to over come, but you can overcome it. you don't need the help of professionals, you just need someone who cares about you and knows how to tell you that you're being stupid in a way that you will understand.

That's exactly what a person who is depressed would say. Many depressed individuals resort to blaming themselves for their state—but that doesn't make it true.

Depressed individuals are not "being stupid"—they are suffering from an accepted disease. Having caring friends and family helping is definitely a good thing, but they shouldn't just tell the person that they're "being stupid". Many times, depressed individuals have just reached such a state of despair that they are under the impression they can never overcome their problems.

Sometimes they do need medical attention, too. Depression is often caused by chemical or hormonal imbalances. At any rate, a trained professional is often needed to help depressed individuals.

I think you're confusing "depression" with "being a whiny teenager". There's a difference. Some teenagers are just whiny; some are actually suffering from depression and need help.

Just because they live "normal" lives doesn't mean they don't have anything to be sad about. True, there are tons of people who have it way worse, but not everyone can be happy with what they have. Right now, your friends need someone who understands them. Maybe they'll feel a bit more...understood...if you listen. instead of you just assuming nothing's going on that maybe they're not telling you. And I get the feeling they're just dissatisfied D:

Why doesn't any one take responsibility anymore?

Don't you feel as if you're generalizing a bit too much? Because of those who surround you are irresponsible, doesn't mean you can conclude the same for everyone else. Please.

You know a good solution to not feeling depressed? Go help somebody.

Why don't you go tell that to your friends?

haha, sorry to say i use to be one of those depressed kids too. and for no apparant reason as well. since i was very well. i guess its just a way of logical thinking that people have. as well, in a very small portion, for me i would think i just feel relieved wen people tell me not to be depressed or something like that. but in whole its just a feeling of worthless in life and that ther is no meaning. however, i think if you find a purpose in life, which i have done (my wife<333) then the depression feeling will go away. however you have to keep in mind, that if that "purpose" in life suddenly somehow disapears, the feeling of the world crashing down on you will be horrible

i don't think you need psychiatrists to get over depression..
People can overcome anything if they really want to.

People can theoretically get over a bad case of pneumonia or the Asian bird flu by themselves, too, but sometimes it does help to have intervention from a trained professional.

I wasn't just depressed for two days. IT is something that you can get over. I've known people that were depressed for a long time and something changed in their lives, and they were a completely different person. Yeah, it's Psychological and chemical, but it's also your feelings and thoughts, which we control. Everything is chemical if you think about it. Your stomach tends to digest slower when you are sad. So, you can't blame depression on a chemical imbalance. I say it's selfishness because all you are doing is thinking about how much your life sucks, and all the problems within it. Yeah, they might think about other people but it's usually how that other person affects you. There is a bunch of crap that has happened to me. Why am I not depressed? Because it's how the person thinks.

You don't need professional help. You might go to counciling and that might help a little.

Wow, I got all these hippy ass sons a bitches trying to pull this psychology sh*t on me. Grow some balls people. Stop thinking about yourself and grow up. Think about other people for a change. It helps. Trust me.

If you say something enough times you will believe it. A lie told enough times will stick in your head and you will believe it as it is a truth. She believes she is basically a piece of crap. Why? Because she's been telling herself that she's nothing.

You clearly have absolutely no understanding of depression or psychology. Many psychologists do attribute at least some forms to a chemical balance, and while it is possible to get over some cases yourself, many times professional intervention is helpful or even necessary.

Again: there's a difference between being a mopey teenager (which is also likely attributable to a change in hormonal balances, but that's of a different type), and being depressed. You're confusing the two.

QUOTE(JakeKKing @ May 27 2006, 12:59 PM) *
I never said the kids in Africa were depressed. I was using them as an example. I'm saying that we have nothing to cry about because we live so much better than they do. I think a lot of the problem is selfishness. When you think about yourself all the time, you're going to get depressed. I also feel that it is a lack of discipline. They don't know how to handle themselves. I'm so sick of the sh*t in today's society. Oh, I'm depressed because it was genetically handed down to me. Oh, boy. What will I ever do in life? BOO f**kin' HOO! I feel like sh*t everytime I feel bad because I know some person has it a thousand times worse than me. You know a good solution to not feeling depressed? Go help somebody. It will make them feel great and also yourself. Physcology is a f**ked up field today. It's just understanding the mind, and now they got it where we have to blame all our problems on some one or something else. Don't tell me that's not f**ked up. Cause it is. Why doesn't any one take responsibility anymore? Why is everyone so damn sensitive when it comes to other people? It's bull sh*t.

You want to help someone feel great and also yourself? Stop getting mad at kids with depression and start trying to help them. And how about you start by keeping your mouth shut, not jumping to conclusions and thinking it from the perspective of someone with depression.

Edit// Oh, and just for the record, I've had depression for 4 years now, so if you want to know why I'm upset, that's why. I dont' want to be depressed. I do have a "perfect" suburban life. Something most kids would wish for, but I don't think I'm selfish. I do volunteer work, I do chores around the house, I do as much as I can, but I'm still suffering from depression. I'm also studying psychology. Depression has nothing to do with your surroundings as someone said before. It's an incurable mental/physical problem that is treated like anything else. It's just a different type of problem that can only be "helped" by counseling or medication. Getting out of depression is something you have to do on your own.

You're probably thinking of people who are in depression but just complain and don't do anything about it, and I'm there with you on that one.

if it has

I'm an emo kid, non-conforming as can be
You'd be non-conforming too if you look just like me
I have paint on my nails and makeup on my face
I'm almost emo enough to start shaving my legs
Cause I feel real deep when dressing in drag
I call it freedom of expression, most just call me a fag

or something like that blink.gif
