At our highschool, we choose which science classes we want to take. Only two are required.

Me:
Hon.Matter and Energy -req.
Hon.Biology -req.
Hon.Physics
AP Physics

Don't let the AP physics throw you though, I suck at it.

Absolutely not, science should remain a core requirement.

The foundations of any study is vastly important to education, especially math and science. If students were to go to college, clueless of atoms, the periodic table or lacking the knowledge of their own anatomy, America's education system would plummet as we know it. Our children will become... brainless to a certain extent.

Taking a science class in high school is nothing compared to what you'll learn in college. It's all basic science, unless you're already taking physics (II).

I would very much like to discuss science with my children when they're in high school. It would prove that my tax money and investment in their education are worth while.

Oh, I dunno if it would be that drastic. Considering it already is like that. Alot of science is like a foriegn language, it gets forgotten over time; due to it's massive amount of disuse by joe schmo.

I mean, if I remember any physics equation or laws when I hit 40, it'll only be because i'm working with it at the time. But things like earth science and biology are essential.

If any subject needs to be beefed up, it's english. People need to learn how to express their feelings/thoughts both in writing and speech, and communicate on a higher level.

You're right science and math seems like they are different languages.

In my opinion, you must learn the basics before getting really into it. For example, I know college students, in the same class as myself, who failed almost every math and science class they took, and when I asked why, their answer was that either they haven't learned this stuff, or that they don't remembered what they learned.

In college, professors will review the basics in introductory classes, but they will not spend the whole semester teaching you what you SHOULD already know.

In other words, you wouldn't be prepared for college if you don't already know some of the basics.

BTW, one of the reason why high schools seem to engage students in all these math and science is because they know that many of their students will NOT go to college. If students do not go to college, it is best that they at least know the basics of science before facing society.

I think it should be the choice of the individual school. [Privatize schools]

Even if it were optional, most students (nearly all!) would take it anyway because colleges recommend it, and also that it's just all around a good idea.

The only people that want science to be optional are the ones that don't like it. I don't like arts subjects like English and foreign languages. Why shouldn't they be optional?

You wouldn't need to use it, but you would still know that it exist. It's knowledge, you decide how to use it.

You don't like it, but if everyone agrees that he/she doesn't like science, and no one wants to learn, do you think America would be as advance as it is today?

I say we should.
Let the people who don't want to learn science, not learn science. ( make any sense? )
Hell, it'd be easier for me to go to college...
I'll know physics, chemistry, and bio.
They'll know... uhhmm..

I would agree with you if it weren't for the fact that we all benefit from well-educated people in our societies.

It would be much easier to go to college, I mean there would be not much of a competition. But that kind of system wouldn't be much of a challenge.

of course we should take science! it is important to most jobs and the basic understanding of science is needed for even the simplest things as cooking meals!

A particle has a constant acceleration of +.5 meters per second squared and is travelling along the x-axis with original point of x=0. Find the position of hte particle at time = 10 seconds. Also, explain what this has to do with cooking meals.

science is a core requirement in almost every single college, and certainly is a requirement in ALL major universities.

It's a roundabout knowledge that everyone should know a bit about. It would be kind of disconcerting when someone makes a joke relating science and everyone else is laughing while you're looking clueless? I've been in that situation with a math joke.

Well, about the news thing, not everyone learns the news. Science is very important to us, because without it being required, there's really no way to learn about nature and so on.
Plus, they need to fill up our schedule. wink.gif

Im not a College student im still a junior in high school but those are the Science and tech classes i have under my belt so far...

Oh and everyone was joking bout how you would use science everyday in life...you do...you look at your Calendar at school or work....which is based on the rotations of the moon, Earth and Sun around the Earth....you go see firework shows and see green because there is copper in them....you have a basic knoledge of physics around you because well you dont fall and you understand how to balance......you use science everyday you just dont realize it....no not all of it is important....but ya kno if it wasnt for at least a bio class...then well you wouldnt understand how your body works...or how a plant grows...and what makes everything live on the earth and how the sun is the ultimate energy source for all living organisms on this planet.....just think bout it through your day and you'll see how much science you really do use.

Nope. Brown Univerisity, an IVY LEAGUE SCHOOL, does not require Science in its core curriculum.
