I hate how all of my favorite books are being ruined when they make it into a film. The Firm, Howl's Moving Castle, etc. They're just so bad, I can't ever stand to read it again.
THEY ARE DESTROYING LITERATURE!! |

I'd just avoid seeing the movie altogether.
But I agree, a lot of movies make a mockery of the actual originals (books). ![]() |

I bet the directors don't even read the books.
Nah, they probably do. But anyway, yes, books are butchered by movies. |

If another mod thinks it better belongs somewhere else, go ahead. But yes, I know what you mean...but its so hard to recreate books from movies, but it drives me nuts too. ![]() |

THEY'RE MAKING A HIS DARK MATERIALS MOVIE?! D= yes, they are. there's a lot of information on it here. they're already holding auditions for the parts and everything. this production's been going on for a while now. Of course this is really great, since it will give His Dark Materials greater fame, and introduce more people to Philip Pullman's fascinating universe. If the movies turn out to be really good, His Dark Materials will be granted cult status for years to come. However, on the other hand, if the films turn out to be terrible spinoffs that aren't able to capture and convey the essence of His Dark Materials, then His Dark Materials fans around the world will be severely dissapointed, and others, who did not read the books, will get a really bad impression of these literary masterpieces. yeah, we'll see. |

I don't really care. If I love a book enough, I won't let a movie ruin it.
I mean, these are movies here people, movies that have big budgets and could care less if they stay true to the book. They care more about using awesome special effects and whatnot. So next time you see a commercial for a movie that came from your favorite book and it looks like an expensive Blockbuster movie, remember that it's probably not going to stay true. |

^ That and look at the Harry Potter franchise: they leave out J.K.'s little subtleties and minute plot twists because there are, quite frankly, a lot of them and it would take forever to make a movie. I mean, really, if the Harry Potter movies were exactly like the books, the movies would be about four to five hours long each. You gotta keep it simple so people don't get impatient and walk out the movies, or otherwise lost.
The problem with most movies that are based on literature is that they are way too ambitious. They take like, 700 page novels and then have to create a shorter, coherent whole for consumption. This is why, for the most part, they don't work. One recent movie that did work as an adaptation was Brokeback Mountain. It was based off of a short story by Annie Proulx, and because it was so short, the screenwriters and director had a lot to work with to tell a movie just over two hours long. |

Yeah, I know what you mean. I hope they don't ruin The Da Vinci Code.
And, since they're making a movie on His Dark Materials I hope that doesn't get ruined either, I loved those books. |
