Man-strength, Does it exist?

I was at dinner with some friends last night, and a few of them brought up the concept of "man-strength". Man strength, as defined by my friend PJ, is when a male suddenly wakes up and has a lot more strength than he used to. As he put it, a young boy is fairly weak; as he progresses through puberty, he may become stronger, but he's still not as strong as an older man, because for some reason, it seems like guys in their 30s and 40s are always stronger than a healthy, hardy 19-year-old—as PJ put it, even a 20-year-old is afraid to fight a 40-year-old. My friend Sean made this illustration: He was in class the other day, and a brawny young student was trying to open a window but couldn't get it up; but then the professor, who is in his 40s, came over and easily opened the window. PJ and Sean attributed this phenomenon to "man-strength".

Several others, including myself, countered that this notion of preposterous. "Man-strength" is nothing but a psychological condition—i.e., it's all in one's head. We claimed that Sean's example is clearly explainable: The younger student loosened the window, making it very easy for the professor to open.

But Sean and PJ insisted that man-strength exists.

You make a good point. Sometimes when I can't open a really tightly closed soda bottle, my father just opens it with ease, and my father's not much stronger than I am, so I guess I just loosened up the cap.

Maybe you just wern't having the greatest day Eddie?

Heh, No really though. I think you just loosened the cap or didn't have that tight enough grip. Iunno, I usually get the job done in these kind of things and if I can't I just use a jar opener.

So you would say it's psychological, or a fluke?

It's psychological.

Or if you're fatigued or not.

That's like pickle jars. It takes me
all my strength to pop one off. And my dad
just stands there and waits for me to give up.
I'm like squating and straining..to the point
where I could have hernia. And then I give
up and hand it to my dad. And guess what?
Pffft. It's off.

I think it's a matter of loosening.

I think it's the loosening. It makes much more sense than manstrength.

Psychological, that's my opinion anyway.

Of course, there are plenty explainations about all the situations. Your/their palms may have been sweaty, so you/they didn't get a good grip. Or you/they were fatigued. Or luck. My dad is much stronger then me, but every once in awhile I can open something he can't.

hehe
that made me laugh..

anyway i guess it could go both ways..

i mean if someone is over looking you to open a bottle you may get uncomfortable
and not be able to open the bottle per say..
and it could be a matter of you just spent all your time lossening the top and
you just lose all your strength and hand it to someone else and they have it off
with ease because you got it pretty lose..
and then it could just be all in your head..
i mean some people are always going to be stronger than you....

hah. either that or skill. you just put a rubberband around the cap, twist it, and it comes right off.

Well, isn't the peak of a man's strength in the thirties or forties? I think I read that somewhere... or maybe it was sexual peak... neverrrrrmind... don't ask.

Our brain's acuity (or something like that) peaks around age 12.

Maybe the older man has went through more in his life, and has more confidence to go the distance?

i believe it man, i guess its kinda like if a 6th worked out alot and was kinda brawny for his age. but if he were to arm wrestle a 10th grader with just natural strength, the 10th grader would still probably win?

LOL XD Yeah I really didn't have a response for this at first because I don't really know, but that just made me laugh.

My dad was always much stronger than both of my brothers, and both were pretty scared of him, lol. He was a pretty big guy. I won't argue that it's not psychological, but it does seem that many men in their 40s tend to be stronger than guys my age.
