In case you didn't know, foie gras {Fwa-grah} is a French delicacy, a pate made from goose liver. I've never tried it, but I dunno if I want to..liver.. sick.gif

I'm not sure when it happened, but when I woke up I was watching the news and they were talking about how foie gras was now officially banned, no chefs could serve it anymore. Their reason? They say that it's animal cruelty, because, supposedly, they force-feed the geese to make the liver meatier or healthier or something.

Knowing this, would you still want to try foie gras? I'm kind of split on the subject. Anything having to do with force-feeding makes me feel ill, but then again, you always hear about how cruel furiers {Spelling?} are to animals before they kill them to use their fur. And who knows what livestock go through before they're killed for their meat..

Edit: I guess I should have posted this in the Foods forum. Oh well.

I have tried it before but I don't like the taste of it.
I've heard that foie gras is no longer imported to HK so the storage should run out anytime here...

I dislike the taste of liver anyway, so I wouldn't mind. Though I do like French cuisine.

Hmm if you think that animal cruelty isn't bad, you pretty much are a cold-hearted ;; yeah =o). and animals DO feel pain, if anyone has ever been to peta.com they show how bad they beat the animals without a care in the world.

Negative.

I've tried it, I didn't like it.I think it was the simple fact that it was liver that didn't allow me to enjoy the taste.

Well, I don't understand why Foie Gras is being banned......Animal Cruelty?

Well, I am ready to be flamed so feel free:

Since when were we so 'sensitive' about animal cruelty?

1 simple question : Do you eat meat? If you do, you are participating in animal cruelty. Those animals were born to serve one purpose : our food. They are slaughtered when they are 'nice and meaty' and they are shipped around the world into markets, and you, the customer, is buying that. All those innocent animals being killed...... Is that animal cruelty? Don't think you can deny that.

If you are a vegetarian, that does not apply to you. But another question : Are plants living things? Don't think you can deny that again. So animal cruelty is a 'no-no', but 'plant cruelty' is ok......the logic doesnt fit here. So cutting the plants, picking them from the ground and killing them is ok, but killing animals are not ok. Can someone explain?

If we seriously care so much about our animals and plants, what the h*** will we eat?

I believe we can only accept the fact this world is not fair (since when was it fair? If you want examples feel free to ask) and animal cruelty is inevitable. This world is not an Utopia, so there is no such thing as 'Perfect'. This world isn't those fairy tale worlds where we can live in harmony with animals and somehow not kill any of them and still have food (But they kill plants! This is a part where many forgets).

I am not a cold-blooded person who doesn't care about anything. It is just that I believe we should start to get realistic here and accept the truth.

Niez_cho : Are you serious? Damn I love eating those things, but are you only talking about citysuper? Over there, French fois gras are not imported anymore but they are starting to import Hungarian ones, so I guess I can still eat it.

I know how that goes. Even if it tastes really good, the thought that it's a gross body part sticks in my mind.

Don't get me wrong, I completely agree with you, but 'plant cruelty?' huh.gif You must be joking. blink.gif We can't be cruel to plants, because I HIGHLY doubt they can feel pain.

Honestly you know what.

I could give two craps less about animal cruelty. When people back in the day ate meat, whether it was scarce or not, people never thought about animals.

Now all of a sudden, when it's more affordable and available we're considering THESE ANIMALS EMOTIONS???

Are you kidding me?!

The life cycle is there for a reason. People didn't randomly decide to go cow hunting one day. Some animals are meant to be eaten by humans for survival. Yes I do agree, it isn't the nicest procedure in the world but hey, sh*t happens.

worthy.gif Wow, nicely said.
It's not that a single person can really affect the number of animals being cruelly treated or killed everyday.
And I think they've only banned the French ones, not the ones from other countries. So yeah.

Who cares? Like typh-a-knee said, that's life. They're freaking plants.

What about exterminators who come to your house to kill your termites? You want to start talking about bug cruelty as well? In fact, maybe all of us should watch our step, so we don't walk on ants or worms or any other form of life on the ground below us. Because that's pretty cruel as well..

oh honestly. plant cruelty.

as if they are bothered by being grown in cramped condidtions, really. and anyway, even if they CAN feel pain, they CANNOT show clear signs of distress, which is no ttrue of animals

Plants are not conscious, intelligent sentients, so while it's true that they are alive, it's not cruel to eat them.
