What do you think about sequals to movies?

ex.
Legally Blonde vs. Legally Blond 2 = Legally Blonde

What do you think?

Uh. Sequals always suck. Except Harry Potter because the books are classic, so if you read the books, you really don't care if the movie sucked. That's beside the point though. The original is just thinking up anything and it happens. A sequal is based on the original and you have to have a lot of new providing facts to make it interesting, etc. Not that many sequals are good.

IN MOST CASES:
first one= really good. (or else there won't be sequels. lol)
second= okay.
third= sucks.
fourth= better than 3rd, but worse than 2nd.
fifth= most movies won't come to this point because of the previous ones (except 1st) aren't that good, well, except Harry Potter which can continue.

Those are based on experience...not every movie applies to it.

There actually are some movies that have at least 3 sequals to their original believe it or not.
Examples...

Harry Potter

Jaws

Star Wars

Lord of the Rings has 3...

Scream has had 4 or 5

Halloween has 8

I think you get the point.

Name some movies that actually have 5 sequals.

Hellraiser
Puppet Master
Friday The 13th
Sleepaway Camp
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Halloween
The Return of the Living Dead
Star Wars (Including prequels)
Planet of the Apes
Godzilla
James Bond
Star Trek
Jaws

Tons more I'm sure.

The general rule is that sequels suck. But, it isn't always true. Refer to the original Star Wars trilogy or Planet of the Apes. James Bond, Godzilla, and Star Trek. Hellraiser and Friday the 13th both have some decent sequels (although no better than the original).

I wouldn't say any of those were a waste of time. I would say that every single one of those are worth a visit, even Puppet Master (I remember watching that when I was too young to sh*t correctly). All of the originals up there are pretty decent. But, I don't care for some of them; James Bond, Star Trek, and Godzilla. On the other hand, I love the original Nightmare on Elm Street, Hellraiser, Friday the 13th, Return of the Living Dead, Sleepaway Camp, Jaws, and Halloween.

Although, I would say most of the originals are worth watching, at least once, most of the sequels aren't worth sh*t. Unfortunately.

I agree with you there. The originals are mos def worth watching. I think once they hit the 3rd movie mark that's enough and sometime's pushing it. 4th is like.....way pushing it, I can only see it happening only if it's really good.

I really hate when they make a sequel of a movie that was real good, but the sequel wasn't as good or it didn't make the theaters.

Yeah, in most cases the very first sequel is such a let down. However, sometimes there is a surprise. For example, Nightmare on Elm Street 7: A New Nightmare. Probably the best or second best sequel of the series. A decent movie.

At the moment I can think of four sequels that were as good, if not better than the first:

Godfather II, Superman II, Empire Strikes Back and Rocky II. (and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom - if you consider that a *sequel*)

Actually, many of the horror sequels have the same exact protagonist and antagonist, and, in most cases, at least the main antagonist is the same. Freddy, or an incarnation of Freddy for Nightmare on Elm Street. Nancy is in or referenced in nearly all the Nightmare on Elm Street films. The Puppet Master tends to recycle their evil puppets. Jason Voorhees is always present as a direct or indirect motivation to all the killings in Friday the 13th. Michael Myers returns as the killer in every single Halloween film aside from the entirely unrelated threequel " Halloween III:Season of the Witch." The Living Dead series as well as the Dead series all relate back to the main issue of a zombie invasion or the aftermath of one. In the Living Dead series everything relates back to Trioxin and secret government studies as a source of the invasion and zombification of humans and animals alike. All the Hellraiser films feature either Pinhead or the Cenobites as antagonists or forms of antagonizers. Several of the Hellraiser films follow the same protagonist. Jaws has the shark.

It varies. Usually the first one is the best and only sometimes do the sequels do better than the original.

They have the same person well yeah, but all the other characters are different people. Nightmare on Elm Street is all wishy washy because half the movies are stupid and different. Though, the Halloween series is also true and movies like 3-7 have nothing to do with the first movie and the 8th is when Jamie Lee Curtis comes back and it turns the plot around again. wink.gif

ahahaha i loved those.

yeah, it really depends. the worst sequels are the ones that don't even have the original cast in them. that really annoys me.

some sequals defy the odds such as spiderman
but some are just horrible and kill the original movie instead of rejuvinating it

Most of the sequels I've seen pretty much suck, because once the first movie's set all the good action and whatnot, the second just is. The same thing.
