I stumbled upon this "blog rant" by JK Rowling. (No, I don't read anything by her, I just found this at random)
http://www.jkrowling.com/textonly/en/extra..._view.cfm?id=22 I've noticed there is a lot of rage towards thin girls, and I'd like to know why. Also, I'd like to know why people think that just because you are small that you are empty-headed and void of intellect. Perhaps it's only jealousy? Why be angry at someone else because of the way they look, and then follow by calling them shallow when they are the ones who are passing judgement upon someone's appearance? If they have such a problem with it, either move on and be happy with yourself (versus insulting someone who is thin) or lose weight and become thin yourself. I find it especially ironic how these are often the same people who believe that all shapes and sizes are considered "beautiful", but then still harp on how terrible skinny girls are. Are the normal/larger girls really the shallow ones, for passing judgement? Or is it the thin girls, who take pride in their appearance and maintain it, or simply are just small? Are the normal/larger girls jealous? All of the above? None of the above? Share your opinions with me. I'd like to know. Speaking from a personal perspective, I am a small person. It's only been that way for about 5 or 6 years of my life. I did diet to become smaller. Well, maybe not diet, more like starve myself. Puberty helped, too. :p I also have a small bone structure, and am just naturally a smaller person. Why should I get the crap from larger girls when I am just, well, me? I do believe I have a brain, and I'm not some mindless airhead just because I'm thin. |

Wow that's very true. I don't think skinny girls are stupid. I think girls who practically brag to everyone, "I'm Anorexic" are stupid.

flaunting you're anorexic is far worse than actually not having a brain.
i'm with you on this. isn't this the lady that has written the harry potter books? |

Wow that's very true. I don't think skinny girls are stupid. I think girls who practically brag to everyone, "I'm Anorexic" are stupid. Agreed. And tiny girls that pinch an inch of skin on their stomach and say "OMGS I AM SO FAT". QUOTE(incoherent) flaunting you're anorexic is far worse than actually not having a brain. i'm with you on this. isn't this the lady that has written the harry potter books? Flaunting anorexia is indeed bad... If they have a problem, get it fixed. It's especially bad when they really aren't, and they glamorize it. Wrong, wrong, wrong. And yes. |

Hmm.. I've honestly never had that problem. I mean, people will jokingly say stuff like "Gosh, I hate you because you're so skinny, you probably starve yourself," but they're kidding (I think).
I think a lot of the rage comes from society pointing everyone towards having to be skinny in order to be beautiful. Of course, now there's this big movement for equality (the Dove campaign, for example), so people are biting back. I do think it's ignorant to try to claim that skinny girls are stupid or inadequate because of their weight, though, just as it would be ignorant to make up another stereotype about people who aren't skinny. edit// Those tiny girls who try to claim to be fat are just looking for attention. If we argue with them and say "Uh, no, you're like the opposite of fat," we're officially giving them exactly what they want. It's sickening to try and get approval like that, but some people do it. =\ |

speaking of flaunting it, i found a group on xanga one time that was something along the lines of "i'm skinny, get over it". not too sure what exactly the wording was, but i visited the leader's site only to find pictures of her posing to show how skinny she was and the last picture being of her throwing up on a couch.

I've never been for skinny girls anyway. I always like girls that are average or a bit on the upper level.

The thing is, I kind of laugh it off when "fat" people say they stuff like, "What, are you making fun of me because I'm fat?" when in reality, skinny people are made fun of more often.
I hear people call others toothpick and anorexic and a bunch of other stuff more often than complaints about "fat" people. Because obviously fat people are to be respected about that, but "skinny" people don't deserve that same respect (sarcasm). Most of the time, these are people that eat even more than me. Plus, there are more people complaining about being unable to gain weight more than being unable to lose weight now. Complaints about being skinny? Because other people call them skinny too...and I think people should recognize that it could potentially be an insult also. I know a girl afraid to wear swim suits because she's afraid she's too SKINNY. And I agree fully about people that say they think girls of all shapes and sizes are beautiful, yet they cannot accept skinny people. Also, it's a very inconsiderate thing to bag on girls that are anorexic because there must have been a lot of stress and people giving pressure that caused this disorder. Also, artists that go through this (I watched the whole JK Rowling thing on CNN) have even more stress because it's their job to keep their figure. Not many people think of it that way. |

There does seem to be a bit of a backlash against people who don't fit the "normal" body type (i.e. people who are "too thin" or "too fat"). Calling someone fat does seem to be a common insult that girls levy against other girls; yet saying a girl is thin is akin to calling her a bitch or something equally bad, because it comes with the connotation that a "thin" person must be dieting, thus must be anorexic, and thus is just perpetuating the societal urge to be thin.
It does seem to be a case of sour grapes. A person wants to be thin due to media pressure, but can't quite achieve that ideal; so she projects her own self-consciousness onto others by insulting their thinness. This, I think, is clearly much like a girl calling another "fat": Girls in particular are afraid of becoming fat, so by calling another girl fat, they are projecting their own fears onto her, and making everyone scrutinize that girl, rather than herself. The net effect is that both words become useful as insults. |

It's funny. My friend really does eat a lot (she absolutely loves chocolate... eats a ton of it) and she weighs... 95 pounds? She's 5'1"-ish. And she [i]complains about being that skinny. No, really. And then I tell her 'anyone else would kill to be you' and she always say back 'once you are, it becomes a lot less desirable'.
I don't know, but... It irks me. Because she's just like that and everyone brings her down for it. Which is maybe why we have very few fashion-inclined friends. |

But I think skinny girls (not all of them though) really shouldn't have a beef over being "picked on" for being thin. Think about it, most girls in this country would love to be skinny, so to be picked on for that is like being picked on for being rich or being really smart. Its not really a bad trait, but I think its a way for others not as blessed to make the person feel like they're not that special. But see, that's the problem: Many people who are thing aren't trying to be thin, they just are. It's not bad to be thin, but people make it bad by using it as an insult in the way in which you suggested. Why is it so important for people who aren't thin to put a thin person down? Clearly it's because they are jealous and projecting their own insecurities onto the thin person, but that hardly makes it right. And as someone else noted, being thin isn't all its cracked up to be, which is why some thin people do "have a beef". |

People who are against thin girls just because they are thin is dumb. It probably is jealousy. But I dont like people who brag about being anorexic or bulimic. |
