This is kinda weird but I was talking with my friend about heaven and we came across a question; can you still go to heaven if you commit suicide?(you would obviously already believe and God and all)
I know it's a weird question but I was just wondering what your opinions were about that. ![]() |

http://www.clarifyingchristianity.com/suicide.shtml http://www.christiananswers.net/q-dml/suic...and-heaven.html http://www.evangelicaloutreach.org/suicide.htm I can see why you're confused. Different groups will tell you different things about what suicide is and isn't, but you know what? The recurrent theme that's backed by the Bible is that God does not like suicide. And why on earth would any Christian want to risk the chance of Hell. |

Right. In Catholicism, suicide is considered a mortal sin {I'm pretty sure other Christian religions would disapprove of it too..}. And since you're already dead, there's no way you can apologize to God for what you did.

It's not for us to know if people went to heaven or to hell. What we can speculate is if what someone did was right or wrong. This is the official Catholic teaching on suicide from the catechism.
QUOTE Suicide
2280 Everyone is responsible for his life before God who has given it to him. It is God who remains the sovereign Master of life. We are obliged to accept life gratefully and preserve it for his honor and the salvation of our souls. We are stewards, not owners, of the life God has entrusted to us. It is not ours to dispose of. 2281 Suicide contradicts the natural inclination of the human being to preserve and perpetuate his life. It is gravely contrary to the just love of self. It likewise offends love of neighbor because it unjustly breaks the ties of solidarity with family, nation, and other human societies to which we continue to have obligations. Suicide is contrary to love for the living God. 2282 If suicide is committed with the intention of setting an example, especially to the young, it also takes on the gravity of scandal. Voluntary co-operation in suicide is contrary to the moral law. Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide. 2283 We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives. |

im not quite religious in any way but i heard from a friend of mine that commiting sucide in Christian Religion is the worst sin possible. She said something like commiting suicide is basically throwing away the life that god gave you or something around that.

we were talking about Romeo & Juliet and wondering if it was a true story if they would go to heaven or hell if that would help at all.
I don't plan on killing myself, no way. |

I'm a Christian, but I definately dont believe that someone who commits suicide is going to hell. I mean, would our "kind and loving" God condemn them to hell? Plus, I think someone who kills themself has to be extremely depressed, and not be thinking clearly / acting like themself.
I also dont think you have to be saved at all to go to Heaven. But whatever. Almost all Christians seem to think they are going to hell. [edit] I believe that Jesus already saved us, when he died on the cross. |

I can't help but think that the Church's condemnation of suicide was a way to combat ritual sacrifice and/or suicide. Christianity taught that faithful Christians who died went to heaven, but the Church leaders couldn't have people killing themselves to get into heaven; thus, they made a condemnation of suicide. I can't help but looking at the political implications of the condemnation. It's similar, in my mind, to why Jesus' birthday is celebrated in December, instead of when he was really born.

I don't really think we can judge God this way. 1) We don't know the fate of a person who commits suicide 2) Suicide is a sin, unless in extreme cases (I suppose the people who died jumping out of the WTC to avoid the fires would not be considered suicides) 3) Would it be fair for God not to punish someone for breaking a rule? You believe in Once Saved, Always Saved right? Does that mean everyone goes to heaven now? I can't help but think that the Church's condemnation of suicide was a way to combat ritual sacrifice and/or suicide. This is a bit troubling. Murder is undoubtedly wrong. Why would killing yourself not be wrong? I'd really like an explanation as to why you think this way. |

Murder is wrong because one takes something precious that belongs to another; but I think that a person certainly has a right to do what he wants with his own possessions, and his own life is one of his own possessions.
I don't advocate suicide, but I don't place it on the same level as murder, because it is a willing act. |

In Islam it's actually one of the major sins. I think it's because you're playing as God you know? Taking your life away whenever you feel like it. Like, it's so bad that the Devil won't even accept you. You don't go to hell nor heaven, just in the middle of the Earth.

Don't get me wrong, I completely agree with you; like, I see murder as a sin because I see it as a form of stealing, stealing someone's life. I don't see how you can steal your OWN life, something that's already yours, but I could also understand why others would say that it's a sin. If you kill yourself, that's still ending a life that God created. It's not giving yourself the chance to live a life that could make you more like Jesus, which is what Catholics say the main reason is for living. Plus, saying that it doesn't affect anyone else would be a weak arguement. It would affect your family, your friends..your whole community. |

The reason why the Church doesn't allow murder is it is not within our right to murder, because only God can give or take away life. |

I mean, with suicide you are taking away your own life, but with murder, you are throwing away the life of someone else. That seems a tad bit worse. On the whole question of whether or not suicide is a sin, I would think it would be. If you are a religious person who believes in God, then suicide would basically be "playing God" and going against him. Then again, perhaps you commiting suicide is part of God's original plan. It's all about what you believe, I suppose. |

If you are a religious person who believes in God, then suicide would basically be "playing God" and going against him. Then again, perhaps you commiting suicide is part of God's original plan. It's all about what you believe, I suppose. First of all, I have to say that suicide is indeed a mortal sin. I've asked my pastor [ I'm a Christian, very religious person. ] about the whole topic and what I know about the sinof suicide I got from her. So I', sure I don't have the the whole thing on it. She said that ( as stated before ) suicide is a sin, and therefore since you have killed yourself,t here is no way of asking forgiveness. Suicide is murder [ I do believe it said something like that in the Bible. ]. It's basically murdering yourself [ and since the poster above said that murdering a person is the worst thing you can do, suicide is no difference. ], and of course, murdering is against the Ten Commandments. But there would be some more debate about the whole "God's Plan" thing, but I will go on the skeptical side of that, my personal reasons. And there is more to this suicide thing I've learned of course, but I'm rathar lazy. |

However, most Christians will probably say that if you committ suicide you do go to Hell because it is a sin unless of course you do not know God, then it's okay and will go to Heaven. I personally do not think God would forbid you Heaven for that, it's like God saying: "I hate you for taking the last dougnet go to your room for your whole entire life". I just don't believe in that. |
