QUOTE(L!ckitySplit @ Mar 6 2006, 6:02 PM) *
....... mellow.gif how was it bad?

gigli was bad, crash was not bad

am i the only one who thought crash was a horrible movie? crash was contrived, obvious, and very overrated. the underlying theme in this movie is that "everybody is a little racist". however, paul haggis's characters all were cardboard cutouts of the most extreme stereotypes, and everything that these characters do revolve around race. this movie hits you repeatedely over the head with "racism is still alive" and "everyone is racist". now, did you really need the movie crash to learn that? what did you really learn from the movie crash?

another reason why i did not like the movie was because it was unrealistic, from the dialogue to the movie scenes. does Los Angeles have only two police officers? another question, does anybody actually talk like the characters in the movie? every quote in the movie was related to race, and every character had a dark and light side. wouldn't it be great if racism was actually like that? this movie is an insult to anyone's intelligence.

now, im not criticizing the acting because the acting was outstanding, but the lack of character depth and irrelevent screenwriting nulled anything positive about this movie. i truly do believe that this was the worst best picture ever, even worse than chicago back in 01.

peter debruge of the miami herald said it best, "Crash is basically just one white man's righteous attempt to make other white people feel as if they've confronted the problem of racism head-on."

listen, if you want a movie that really delves into race, then you would be better watching american history x or even spike lee's do the right thing. if you don't know that racism is bad or you are a big ludacris fan, then go see crash.

QUOTE
One last one. You’ve just been told by your hot, hot girlfriend, with whom you’re lucky to be sleeping in the first place, that she is not Mexican as you presumed; that her mother is from Puerto Rico and her father is from El Salvador. What do you say?

1. “I’m sorry, honey. I’m surprised I didn’t know that. Now come back to bed.”
2. “Really? How did they meet?”
3. “Who took [all Latinos] and taught them to park their cars on their lawns?”

And on and on and on. Every scene. Put a little pressure on somebody and they blurt simplistic racist sentiments. Right in the face of someone of that race.

Worse, none of it feels like sentiments these characters would actually say. It feels like sentiments writer/director Paul Haggis imposed upon them to make his grand, dull point about racism, when a more telling point about racism might have emerged if he’d just let them be. “Crash” is like a Creative Writing 101 demonstration of what not to do as a writer. To the Academy this meant two things: Best screenplay and best picture.

Martin Scorceze: 0 Oscars...Three Six Mafia: 1.
- Jon Stewart

I love Jonny.

I'm happy Reese won; I have yet to see Walk the Line (I want to, though...I wanted to see it in theaters, but no one ever goes to see movies with me besides Harry Potter at midnight biggrin.gif), but I've always been a Reese fan. I've heard good things about Munich and Capote and wanted to see both. I think Matt Dillon should have won for Best Supporting Actor regardless of the movie he was winning for as a whole; the acting wasn't bad. I also wanted to see Good Night and Good Luck...I didn't see any of these movies, so I can't have a very valid opinion.

Speaking of Harry Potter, I'm totally having a Harry Potter party tomorrow and it's gonna be so sweet. This is irrelevant, but I just wanted to brag because people are actually coming. Like, more than 10. That's the most I've ever gotten to come to my house, hah. Thanks, Harry!

They're biased for not picking Brokeback Mountain, too. laugh.gif

Oh, and I LOVE how Stephen Colbert predicted all of these Oscar winners. happy.gif

I was delighted with Reese Witherspoon, George Clooney and Ang Lee. I thought that Brokeback would take it for Best Picture but...eh.
^ I agree. I can't believe Crash took it.

George Clooney was actually really good. I agree with you about Crash though. I still think it was a mercy win.

About this Crash thing:

Granted, I fell for it when I saw it. It gives you an emotional handjob, makes you feel something (especially that part with the little girl...) and then, in the end, leaves you dissatisfied. I wanted this movie to be great and it wasn't. It wasn't horrible, it just wasn't very good. Like others have said, it says nothing new about racism and too over-the-top to be taken seriously.

Is "everyone a little bit racist?" Of course. But it didn't need to be shoved down our throats like that. It comes off as arrogant, not only on the part of the filmmakers, but on the Academy as well. The Academy likes to think of itself as progressive and liberal but if they were really any of those things, the gay cowboys or the post-op transsexual would've won. Look at the awards ceremony, it was a big tribute to how progressive the Academy is, especially that whole bullshit montage with Malcolm X, A Time to Kill, and To Kill A Mockingbird.

And about the last two, I noticed a similar trend in Crash, not just the racism bit. In order to have a "happy ending," the white male saviour archetype has to swoop in and save the day. It's been done a million times, can we have a new ending, please? Like Nate said, it lectured us on being racist but falls victim to it as well.
