It really depends on who I'm smiling to and the situation. The way to distinguish a fake smile from a genuine one is by looking at their eyes. If it's a real smile, there will be crinkle(s) at the eyes because of the cheek muscles. I forgot the biology of it but I think BBC has some info about it.

If its a cute small smile with the head bent down, she has a crush on you probably...
If its a quik small smile its most probably to say hello or being friendly. When i smile to guys its because i like them so yeah. |

Most of the time you can tell a genuine smile by the look in that persons eyes. You can see a smile in the eyes, so to speak.
