Sex-harass suspension of 1st grader stirs debate
Experts say kids his age don’t understand; mother is outraged

A 6-year-old boy is getting a lesson on the meaning of sexual harassment long before he’ll be able to spell it.

The first-grader was suspended for three days for sexual harassment after he put two fingers inside a classmate’s waistband, school officials told his mother, Berthena Dorinvil. The boy told her he only touched the girl’s shirt after the girl touched him.

Experts say only in rare, troubling cases can children that young truly sexually harass one another.

I'm sure the school district got legal opinions from their attorney(s) before giving this punishment. If the girl's parents were really pushy, they could have threatened a bunch of legal action if the district didn't do something. It's my guess the district was backed into the corner or simply set out to make an example of this kid.

It's hard to accurately define the appropriateness of the suspension because the district is bound by confidentiality laws that will restrict disclosure of this situation.

I should have been suspended for a million times.
Come on, it is just the waistband, not her chest or privates...or taking her clothes off, things like that.

We all know that children at that age is just curious about the differences between the genders, but it is just unreasonable to say the kid was harassing the girl

That's ridiculous! Six year-olds do not have the brain capacity to even understand sexual harrassment.

I agree....

A guy at my school smacked me in the face, intentionally, in high school, and he got 5 days suspension. So he was only two days more severe than in innocently ignorant 6 year old? I mean seirously, the boy probably didnt even mean to. If he stuck two fingers in her cootchie, another story. BUt did he? No. How rediculous. I know people who have done much worse in high school, where they know exactly what they are doing, and have gotten less severe punishement. He didn't even grope her chest. dumb dumb dumb. Just swat his hand and tell him he cant do that. Its not nice. This crap is gonna follow him around for a long time. He won't even know what he did for a nother couple of years. Puh.

blink.gif This reminds me of that family in my friend's neighborhood. The father has been accused of sexual assault 4 times and has been in jail for about 10 years of his life total, one of his two sons is currently in jail for sexual misconduct, the other one is away with his grandfather so he won't have to deal with his father, and the mother ran away a long time ago. I feel sorry for them, but at the same time, I find it really disgusting.

That...is truly idiotic.
I use to run around the playground trying to kiss boys and I never got suspended. Really, come now. Did this little girl get suspended as well? No. Geez-that's what kids do at this age. They really should've let him off.

thats not right. Its a 6 year old. I doubt he meant to do any real sexual harrasement. Its probably all a misunderstanding. How much can a 6 year old know. This is like my first time hearing a 6 year old getting suspended. wow. just wow.

thats messed up...and ppl ARE sexist against boys...

i remember i worked as a YWCA assistant counselour and we worked w/ 2nd graders...all the other assistant counselours were 16 yr old females and they thought this little 2nd grader boy was cute...so they chased him around and gave him wedgies and spanked his ass playfully...

if a 16 yr old guy had done that to a 2nd grader girl....he WOULDVE BEEN FIRED and accussed...but the girls didnt get in trouble for it b/c...we were females...so its ok for us to do that to a little boy..it was kinda..pedophilic tho...for 16yr old girls to have a little crush on a..7 yr old boy..

Honestly. How the heck was he supposed to know? My four-year-old sister has got to be the horniest one in her preschool and she doesn't get suspended.
