QUOTE(yo pusha @ Feb 12 2006, 4:27 PM) Sure, I'd say Bill and Melinda Gates are a prime example. They go way above and beyond the call when it comes to dishing out charity. Considering the fact that their charitable organization is worth $29 billion. And that itself filters directly to the impoverished people of the world. |

There are people who are kind and donate and such and such and they can do it just to make them seem nice or become popular. There are those who contribute because they feel that it's a "must". It really depends on the individual.

One can argue that it all boils down to personal satisfaction, but one can argument that the motivation, even if it is personal satisfaction, doesn't really matter. In that sense, charitable giving is a perfect example of "the ends justify the means": a charity gets a sizeable donation no matter what, which is always a good thing.

Mother Teresa, The Dalai Lama, Gandhi and many others exemplify the meaning of altruism.

QUOTE(illumineering @ Feb 12 2006, 10:52 PM) I am sure they were happy with helping others though thats why they continued helping people cause they felt happy. altruism is when you dont get anything out of helping people. ------- i think someone that has no spirit and wishes that they die then gives all their money away to the poor could be considered. i mean thats the only way i see. |

You're reading too closely into the definition though. The word altruism was invented for people like Ghandi and the Dalai Lama... |
