Sex-harass suspension of 1st grader stirs debate
Experts say kids his age don’t understand; mother is outraged

A 6-year-old boy is getting a lesson on the meaning of sexual harassment long before he’ll be able to spell it.

The first-grader was suspended for three days for sexual harassment after he put two fingers inside a classmate’s waistband, school officials told his mother, Berthena Dorinvil. The boy told her he only touched the girl’s shirt after the girl touched him.

Experts say only in rare, troubling cases can children that young truly sexually harass one another.

Maybe I'm naive in saying this, but I believe that a three day suspension is way too harsh in this case. In my mind, I don't believe that six-year-olds have it in their conscious thoughts and behaviors to force any type of sexual contact onto another being. I know I didn't. Not for a long time, at that.

That's ridiculous! Six year-olds do not have the brain capacity to even understand sexual harrassment.

What in the world????

My son is six - if he were ever suspended for something like this at his age, I would seriously march my ass up the City Hall steps and do some serious spanking.

a 6 year old got suspended for that?

all he did was stick two fingers in some girl's waisband. it's not like he took her clohtes off or touched her in private areas. he was probably going to give her a wedgie or something _dry.gif

like what other's have said, he probably didn't even know that it was "wrong."

thats absolutely ridiculous though. i too believe that at that age they aren't conscious of what they are doing...its not like he even stuck his whole hand into her pants or anything, jeez...

that's ridiculous. six-year-olds can't even comprehend the meaning of sex or anything like it at their age. and by calling "sticking two fingers into her waistband" sexual harassment? it's not like she protested against it. children at this age don't understand anything remotely sexual, to them, it was probably all just a game.

although at that age, one would thing that would be labelled simpyl as bullying, rather than sexual harrasment.

He probably doesn't even know what the word 'sex' means. Hence, he doesn't know what 'sexual harassment' means. Suspending him for three days is ridiculous.

little kids just think that the opposite sex has cooties, they're not aware that it could count as sexual harassment...or even know what that is anyway.

Maybe I should have been suspended for sexual harassment when I was his age. I ran around the playground telling boys I wanted to have sex with them before I even knew what it was.

That requires intent, though. A six-year-old can hardly intend to sexually harass someone; except in very specific circumstances, he doesn't even know what sexual harassment is.
